Ok how the hell was the first operating system programmed if there was no operating system to program it on?

...and....

How was the first compiler compiled?

(I suppose this could have gone with my thread in the perl forum...nm)

Anyone could write a DOS. You don't need any platform to write a DOS. Just start writing your own language!

Twenty years ago in college, they said you start by writing an assembly language compiler in binary.

I remember from my old computing job that binary codes were run through a custom compiler chip built into the old fashioned mainframes, which spited the final code onto tape reels - I think. Was many years ago...

This was in the early eighties in the UK. I remember my boss interviewing some poor chap for a printer assistant position(!) and insisting on a Uni degree just to operate the dam things Laugh
