php & mysql

I meet a question when I practice PHP and MySQL:
I have $db=mysql_connect(); or $db=mysql_pconnect(); in my *php code.
I got error message:
"Call to undefined function: mysql_connect()"
"Call to undefined function: mysql_pconnect()"

Will you tell me that what is the possible solution?

I have installed Mandrake Linux in my PC. There are PHP, MySQL , Apache
come with Mandrake installation.
