Help me please...
I'm trying to install Links 2 and this is the error I am getting, when I click on "Build All" in the admin.cgi

Also, where would the public have to go to view my links? I've uploaded all my files into the CGI-BIN directory...Even the templates.

what do i have to put in my public directory so my visitors can see my links?

Set the permissions of the backup folder to 777.

To create the folders and set the CHMOD permissions, check out the following link:

http://www.gossamer-threads.com/...5&vc=1#Post84226

In the link above the original Links does not have the following folders and files associated with them

755 DIRECTORY cgi-bin/links/admin/Html/

755 DIRECTORY cgi-bin/links/admin/Lwp/

755 * Parallel (SUBDIR)

755 DIRECTORY cgi-bin/links/admin/lwp/Parallel/

755 * Protocol (SUBDIR)

755 DIRECTORY cgi-bin/links/admin/lwp/parallel/Protocol/

Basically, all the cgi/pl files are 755, the db/html's are 666 and most ( not all ) of the others are 644.

When things don't build, it's usually a permission problem, or you copied/typed something wrong...

I did not put my templates in the cgi-bin/links/admin/templates folder.
I ended up putting then in a folder underneath my public folder. If you do that, remember to change the path in the links.cfg file ( search for the word templates ). The reason for doing this is to allow for headers and footers. Those will come a little later on as you use Links....you quickly get tired of editing 20-30 files just to change the same item in each template.

Oh. Is this an update? I must be using one of the older copies. The only folders i have are;

cgi-bin
cgi-bin/admin
cgi-bin/admin/backup
cgi-bin/admin/templates
cgi-bin/admin/data
cgi-bin/admin/data/rates
cgi-bin/admin/data/hits
pages

Thats it! What version is Links 2 up to now?

See Ya

That's what Eliot just mentioned: Links 2.0 is the old version, the current version is 2.01! Tongue

The "normal" folders are as you list...The link I referenced had some additional folders that been added due to some MODs that the author had installed. I was just pointing out that "Buckshot" may not need these folders for a basic installation. I have not had a need for the LWP folder. While the instuctions contained two different ways to set up the folders, the basic information is there ( but, what the hey, I getting oldtimers disease anyway -- LOL )

The one difference is that I have other perl programs installed so I don't clutter up my cgi-bin folder. I put each perl program in its own folder.

Instead of
cgi-bin
cgi-bin/admin
cgi-bin/admin/backup
cgi-bin/admin/templates
cgi-bin/admin/data
cgi-bin/admin/data/rates
cgi-bin/admin/data/hits
pages

I have
cgi-bin/links
cgi-bin/links/admin
cgi-bin/links/admin/backup
cgi-bin/admin/links/data
cgi-bin/admin/links/data/rates
cgi-bin/admin/links/data/hits
public_html/pages
public_html/templates

Not any better, just a different way to accomplish the same thing.

As I understand version numbering versions with minor changes use a decimal number. So there's probably not a lot of difference between 2 and 2.01. Not much to get excited about, anyway, in terms of features, etc.
