When I try to add categories the form brings up another instance of itself in the far right frame. Then when I try to view the category that I just added it says no such file exists.

Do you click on the Add button or do you simply hit your Enter key??? If it is the latter, then that is the problem...you need to click on the Add button.
Also, make sure that your categories.db file is set to 666 (rw-rw-rw-).

I click on add. I checked the permissions on the categories.db and they are set to rw rw rw

Figured it out! on my url paths in the links.cfg file I left out the www. example. $db_dir_url = "http://localhost/links/cgi-bin". Once I added the www the script works! example: $db_dir_url = "http://www.localhost/links/cgi-bin
