MyLinks Database Version
I've finished the database version of mylinks.

As it uses the database to store the links it needs some way of knowing who has what links saved in their favorites list so it requires users to register/login or just login if they are already registered.

Before I decide how I'm going to release it I was hoping some of you may just let me know the features you'd like.

Currently the plugin options allow admin to limit the total number of saved links per user (global...not per user as in a different limit per user) and set the spanning limit....eg....

Page: [<<] 1 2 3 [>>]

Any more ideas?

it would be great if there would be an option (admin) to display a "DELETE"-Button or Link next to /or under every link in the users favorites, so if this option is enabled, the user just have to click on the button/link to delete the link from his favorites list.

The links in the favorites list use a different link.html file so it says "Delete It" next to all favorites :)

Paul,

A lot of sites are letting users publish what used to be "private" data. So, you can make your links file public, or private, like a wish-list -- or more like a top-10 thing.

What comes next, is reviews/ratings of the links lists. :)

Then, comes the ability to "hide" adult links from public view, etc.

It never ends <G>

Hi Essam,

I've added the ability to be able to send "favorites" to yours friends list. You enter their username and the link gets added to their list. They get an email informing them of the addition to their list so they can delete it if they wish.

Hi Paul,

To add to Essam's request of categorized links, it would be good if the stored links in the users' database could be grouped by category - for example, if the user has two links stored from a category called "cars", both links would appear together on their favorites page.

An admin option which allows the site owner to set the default sort value for the way the links are displayed. The default is probably by the Link ID or Title, but to be able to specify which field the links should be sorted by in the MyLinks admin would be handy.

Kind regards,
Amanda

Of course, creating new categories will be a plus, as it is more flexible and useful for users. But the second would be ok also, if the first is not possible :)

Attached is the MyLinks Database plugin.

It is a 3 day trial so you can see whether you like it or not before buying a license. The price is $40 and enables you to get free upgrades. You'll find info about how to purchase a license when the plugin expires, however if you really want to know (or want to pay immediately) just email mylinks@wiredon.net

I've added grouping so all favorites in the list are grouped by the category they reside in, in the database and it shows the linked category title at the top of every group of links.

I attached a screen shot to better explain what I mean.

I'll send an email to Alex to see if I can get it added to the GT server and let you know if/when it is uploaded.

Thanks.

(I have my fingers crossed that there are no major bugs Smile )

It will be extra nice and useful if the admin/user can make the users links pages available to the other users to view without the ability to modify..

Also if the public links page can have all the users tables fields available in it.. so the user can somewhat customize it.

That will be great idea to share links among friends and non friends in a customized page.

Hi Paul,

I'm giving your DB MyLinks a spin on my site and would like to say you've done a great job!

Although I have a quick query about the way links are stored. Can the LinkIDs of the stored listings be combined into one table which is then associated with the one UserID?

I just added three listings to MyLinks and had the username appear in the MyLinks table three times, with one link ID next to each username:

UserID | LinkID
test | 514
test | 562
test | 563

I'm currently using PortalLinks 2.0 (because I haven't released my Links SQL version until it's completely setup). I have 1,900+ registered users, with some users having as many as 300 - 400 stored links and I'm concerned my database will get bloated with duplicate UserID fields in the MyLinks table.

Is it possible to store the LinkIDs in the one field which is connected to the UserID? Eg:

UserID | LinkID
test | 514,562,563
anotheruser | 562,888,965,35
somebody | 563,335

Sorry, I can't get the text to line up. Smile I've used a | to separate the fields.

Thanks in Advance,
Amanda

The "Link Added" page should be a popup, so users don't have to backtrack.

Spanning...yes....click "Edit" after installing the plugin.

Im not sure what you mean about static pages?....

You can change the link added page to a popup by making a simple template change. You could put a javascript popup in the add success template and redirect it to mylinks.cgi using location.href ....that should work as you require.

Thanks Cool

As for the other question....I thought it may pop up. I've done something like this in the past using commas instead of new rows but apparently it goes against the whole idea of using an sql database.

Rows are there to be used so cramping everything into one row isn't such a good idea and less manageable.

Tables have a 2GB limit so 1600 users won't get anywhere near that limit.

If you take a look at the catlinks table it is done in a similar way:

LinkID CategoryID
1 1
2 1
3 1
4 1
5 1
6 1
7 1
8 1
9 1
10 1
11 1
12 1

....the only reason I use a name instead of id for UserID is because the users table doesn't use an ID

That is a terrific idea!

User Favorites pages could be rebuilt independently of the main build, (ie: more often), or just when favorites are added or deleted.

Maybe have space for personal or other info ...

Why not make it a default for all users who set Favorites? The Admin list should be a ban list for users who fool about.

Thanks to your prompt reply to my earlier comment - I guess your right about defeating the purpose of an SQL database, my main concern was saving space. I've only got 200Mb of space, so I was trying to think of a way of limiting the size of the sql database for MyLinks - especially when some of my users will store hundreds of links. Never the less, I think your SQL DB adaption of this script is awesome. I'll just have to fork out for the extra space when the time comes!

As for the static vs dynamic MyLinks pages, I think the dynamic version is much more useful. Static pages will take up a lot of storage space, and it sort of defeats the purpose of having an interactive function if the user has to wait until the directory is updated/re-built until their new and removed links are updated. This also won't be much good for those who use a shared server and don't have the resources to build the directory multiple times a day.

Ok I think I'll start with the dynamic version and may make the static building optional in a future release.

Ok I've put up the demo of the viewable user favorites....you can check it out here:

http://www.wiredon.net/...do=user_list&d=1

There is an admin option so you can stop certain user lists being shown if they request that or you just want to be mean and block their list :)

You can see that by clicking "Admin" which is blocked.

I've updated the plugin on the GT server too so you can now dowlnoad the updated version.

Is there any reason why the static page could not be re-built when a link is added or deleted? The program has to make some kind of page -- why not offer the option of dynamic or static?

Static pages would mean much less work for the server if these pages are available to other people.

Hi Paul

As A matter of fact the demo you have is just what I asked for ..
Dynamic is the best way to go for the server, space wise and headache..
Two questions ..
1- Does the user or the admin has the option to make a specific users links page visible to public or not?
2- Does the users's links page has all the users table field available in it?

THis plug in looks really good and well done Paul..

Currently only admin. If a user doesn't want it viewable they'll need to ask admin to block it. I think a user option should be added too but Im wodering where to set the option. I think it would need to go into the users table so I'd have to get the plugin to add a new column.

Shouldn't be too tricky...I'll have a play about later tonight or in the morning.

>>
2- Does the users's links page has all the users table field available in it?

Oh poop. It will do when I make it do so Blush

mmm the user list page does though. It uses a loop so you can add extra columns to the list like <%Email%> if you so desire.

Re: [katabd] MyLinks Database Version In reply to
Ok those two issues are fixed. All info from the users table is available on the user favorites page and users can now decide whether they want to hide or show their list. You won't see it on the demo as I did it on my local copy.

I've updated it on GT's server.

Hmm not easily. The easiest way would probably be to use a loop and then check how many iterations have occured and then add in a new table row but it doesn't currently use a loop.

I've updated wiredon with the latest version. Changes include:

Show/Hide list to the public
Users can now rate lists 1-10
There is some IP tracking to prevent rating abuse....not fool proof but annoying enough to limit abuse.
A few new templates and some minor changes to existing ones.

http://www.wiredon.net/...in/lsql/page.cgi?d=1

You can click "User List" or "MyLinks" in the menu bar. User List doesn't require you to be logged in.

I just found a "bug" ish type thing when rating which means you need to be logged in but I am going to make that into a feature :) ....Im going to add an admin option so that ratings can either be allowed only from logged in users or anyone. After adding that change I'll update it on GT's server.

Do you mean that it should always group but by category id or alphabetical ....if you mean this, what is grouping alphabetically?...by letter?

_or_

It should group by category or not group and list alphabetically?

Both ways are pretty tricky. The script selects from the mylinks table which only stores the user id and link id and then pushes everything into a big hash and then does the selecting from the links table.

Im fairly certain I will have to make quite a few changes. I'll give it a go though and see what I can come up with.

Hmmm Unsure

Hi,

I've finished all the updates and have uploaded it to GT's server.

Attached is a screen shot of what the user preferences page looks like.

Users can set the number of links per page, grouping options and ordering options.

It is officially the mothership of plugins (apart from GT's spider Laugh) so go gentle on me if you find any bugs Angelic

....oh nearly forgot, when you enter your admin page after installing the plugin, under "Quick Links" you'll see a new option..."MyLinks Users"...which links to the user list.

oops also admin can set whether just members or members and guests can rate lists.

Hi Paul

Look real nice..
One small THING
When the user selects No Grouping it will apply that to the user main page but not to the user public page.
I have not look into that yet.. but I think it is A MINOR BUG.

Hi,

No it isn't a bug, I made it like that on purpose so that all user pages appear the same to people viewing them. I set it to group by category so that visitors could go to the category the link came from if they wished.

The only time is shows in a customized way is when the owner is logged in to their own personal account.

Hi
what should I do to change that?
or can we use No group in the public page then use the display the parent categor below the link through a Mylinks_link variable?

Do you think I should change it for the proper plugin?

I thought a standardized page for visitors would be the way to go or should I get it to display the links the way it shows for the list owner?

I can always send you the altered copy if people want it left as it is.

Hi
I have seen that users love to have control over the look of their pages more than carring about the look of the site that offers them the service itself.
So I think the option of sorting the public links should be up to them.
In addition most regular users will be checking their links from public compyters and they might not wanna log in.. so seeing their links sorted the way they want to is appreciated.

Just what I think

Fantastic plugin! Have just installed and will _definitely_ be paying for this one.

Have you considered adding the ability to let users add a set number of links that are *not* in the DB? a "Personal Links" category, persay?

I'm sure everyone has a feature request, but I think that would make this one perfect.

I'd gladly pay a bit more (ask for details) if you'd be interested in doing this - either as part of the plugin or as a custom job.

Awesome work!

Actually Paul

I think that letting users have the ability to modify their variables will give us - webmaster- the flexability to add a lot of features without yoru having to go throu the headache..

The one that AMjones mentioned can be done by adding a custom fields to the users table (URL1, Title1, URL2, Title2...) and giving users the ability to modify their profile..

and simply do <%if URL1%> and <%Title1%> statments in the public page ..

Again I think the users ability to modify their profile will give your plug in an extra powerfull cababilities...

And for the money issue you mentioned Your work does deserve the money...

Hi, nice idea. How should they do it? ....should there just be a form like add.cgi ?

In response to katabd's post, I think rather than using the users table a seperate table should be used for personal links. Ideally I'd want to use the Links table but then the links would start showing in the main directory.

Hmm I'll have to think about this. I think it should be kept fairly simple in any case and just have fields for title, url and description. I reckon that shouldn't be too hard.

Hokay, I'm too good to you lot.

I've added the ability to add custom links to the database. It allows a title/url/description and an add date is automatically inserted. It uses the same font that the list owner sets for the normal favorites list or the default if none is selected, it will also order by whatever the list owner sets as the order field but will default to Title if an option is selected that can't be used for the custom list (ie not Title/URL/Description)....so if the owner sorts the main list by isNew it will default to Title as isNew isn't available in the custom list table.

It is up on the demo at: http://www.wiredon.net/...in/lsql/page.cgi?d=1

Just log into your account and you'll see the new option.

Its up on GT's server.

I'll have to be mean and say any more features requested on top of what exists will result in a price increase as even now I think $40 is a serious bargain for what you get. Hope that doesn't seem too harsh.

Error running installation code: Plugins::MyLinks_DB (27025): Unable to create: Could not create table 'lsql_MyLinks'. Reason: It already exists at /home/*****/public_html/cgi-bin/admin/GT/Plugins/Manager.pm line 247.

What do I do to get this fixed??? I performed the full uninstall before hand.

Thanks for your help.

When you uninstall the plugin it should remove that table ready for the next install.....hmm

You can fix the problem by dropping the MyLinks table using mysqlman. You may want to make sure MyLinks_Rating and MyLinks_Custom were dropped too.

Ok, in MyLinks_DB.pm line 81 in EditPlus, you'll see:

my %grp;

...change it to:

my %grp;
my %match;

Then a few lines down you'll see:

Code:
while (my $rec = $sth->fetchrow_hashref) {
push @{$grp{$rec->{CategoryID}}}, Links::SiteHTML::display('mylinks_link', { %$rec, MyLinks_Font => $tmp->{MyLinks_Font} } );
}

....you need to change it to:

Code:
while (my $rec = $sth->fetchrow_hashref) {
unless (exists $match{$rec->{LinkID}}) {
push @{$grp{$rec->{CategoryID}}}, Links::SiteHTML::display('mylinks_link', { %$rec, MyLinks_Font => $tmp->{MyLinks_Font} } );
$match{$rec->{LinkID}}++;
}
}

Then on about line 112 you'll find:

Code:
while (my $rec = $sth->fetchrow_hashref) {
$tags->{saved_links} .= Links::SiteHTML::display('mylinks_link', { %$rec, MyLinks_Font => $tmp->{MyLinks_Font} } );
}

You'll need to change it to:

Code:
my %match;
while (my $rec = $sth->fetchrow_hashref) {
unless (exists $match{$rec->{LinkID}}) {
$tags->{saved_links} .= Links::SiteHTML::display('mylinks_link', { %$rec, MyLinks_Font => $tmp->{MyLinks_Font} } );
$match{$rec->{LinkID}}++;
}
}

Then you'll need to make the same changes for the user_favorites routine further down (about line 287 and 314).

Let me know if you get stuck.

No, the line definately didn't exist - I searched out bits and pieces of it and found nothing similar. So I unstalled then re-installed the plugin, and there was some options that weren't there before (bad users, who can rate). So I'll give the changes another go, but I also have another problem - the registration file I just got isn't working for the re-installed version I just installed. It says it has been successfully updated, but the plugin itself is telling me that it's a 3 day trial.
