Ban Words?

Ban Words?
Hi,

I am interested in your script but was wondering if it was possible to ban or censor certain words from being posted. Forgive me if the answer is obvious and I am missing it Blush

Thanks for your time,

Hi, I don't think it is currently available by default but I could make a quick plugin to filter words for you using the built in plugin system if you wanted..

Hi,

You can use Markup tags to do simple word filters. You can substitute any word for anything else. For instance, if you use the words Gossamer Threads on this forum, it automatically hyperlinks that to our URL. You could easily add some banned words that get replaced with [censored] or something else.

Cheers,

Alex

Argh you meanie just as I'd finished the plugin :(

It does some nice filtering:

If you filtered "crap" all the following would be *'d out.

crap
crappy
crappola
c_r_a_p
c.r.a.p
c r a p
c___r___a___p

...and any other weird characters inbetween the letters.

Does your plugin allow people to just enter a list of words in one shot? If so release that sucker Wink

How do you mean?...you can add words from the plugin manager page if thats what you mean?

The only thing it currently has problems with is words with duplicate letters...Im working on a fix for that.

eg...

ccrraapp wouldn't be filtered.

Oooo sweeet. I think I've got it figured so that it's going to be really hard for anyone to get around but it won't screw up normal sentences...so lets say the bad word was "crap"

The following will get nuked:

crap
c r a p
c.r.a.p
c..r..a..p
c-r-a-p
c--r--a--p
c/r/a/p
c@r@a@p
ccrraapp
cccrrraaappp
crappola
crapping

_but_ the following will work fine:

crabs play on the beach.

Im sure there is some way to get around it but it doesn't really need to be like Fort Knox.

If anyone wants to test you can go to:

Filtered words are "crap" and "smelly"

Sorry,

Just read to the link line, didn't read your limitations below it. Really, I don't know what all those words meant, just heard them once in school.

Ahh so it was you Cool

Well they are filtered out now...but your post also helped me spot a bug which is now fixed.

That limitation I mentioned above is also now fixed :)

Welp, if interested here it is...

I might ask GT to add it to their server for others to download unless it actually turns out to be poop.

Let me know how it goes (anyone who uses it).

Hi Paul

I'm confused. Didn't alex state in this message that this is already built into Gossamer Forum? Why the plugin?

Hi,

No problem. Do you have a URL I could peek at?

Dammit....I knew it was too good to be true.

To prevent people entering stuff like ccrraapp I filtered out duplicate letters but obviously this is flawed for example lets assume our naughty word is "boobies"....the code will remove duplicate letters and you will end up with:

bobies

...so the filtered word will look like:

b****** instead of *******

Its not a huge deal as it will still filter but it just means stray letters will show...sigh.

You can use the markup tags.
They work fine.

Under Markup Tags in Admin, The section on the bottom covers word substitution.

Only limitation is that you must put in entries one word at a time, no bad word lists allowed.

So, you might do the "top" 10 or 20.

Top box you put the bad word to be changed:

f%k

bottom you put in the replacement :

#$^#

or whatever strikes your fancy.

Hello, and thank you for your plugin, which I just downloaded.

GT's Resource centre link:
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/products/resources/Detailed/Word_Filter_Plugin-2000.html
leads to this thread.

I will get help to install the plugin.

Meanwhile, does it handle characters from many languages? My site is set to UTF-8. Is there any tweaking I will need to do?

Hi,

You may not have much luck getting hold of Paul, as he has been banned from here for a very long time Whistle

For the characters - I would just give it a go and see if it works.

Cheers
