Etegory not valid

Yes, it's me again. I still haven't figured out my building problem but I've found the problem. After checking the error logs, I found that the server was returning this specific error whenever I tried a build:

BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /home/XXXXXX/public_html/cgi-bin/links/admin/nph-build.cgi line 36.
'Ętegory' is not a valid variable name at /home/XXXXXX/public_html/cgi-bin/links/admin/nph-build.cgi line 36

My problem: when I uploaded nph-build.cgi, it was changing a %category to Etegory. So, easy fix, I edited the file. Except everytime I edit it, the *&*%&-ing editor changes it back to Etegory. I tried uploading a new nph-build.cgi. It *still* changes it.

I shouldn't be asking but everyone here seems so smart. Does anyone know what is the problem? Am I uploading wrong? Do I need to go ask the people who host my website? I'm sure someone will just sigh, whack me about the head, and tell me it's a simple fix but I'm rather clueless right now...
