What if you wanted to make links your default main page? chmoding public_html or www is not a good idea is it?
Well, you probably do not have your $build_root_url and $build_root_path variables configured correctly in your links.cfg file.

No, it is not.
All you have to do is create an empty index.shtml or index.html file (depending on the extension you specified in your links.cfg file), upload it to your <ROOT> (public_html) directory, and then change the file permission to 777.
That's all you have to do to build pages from the <ROOT> directory.
BTW: Don't forget to change the directory and file references in the links.cfg file before re-building your index via the Build options in your LINKS MANAGER or via telnet.
