idea for ad on
It would be nice if someone would write an add-on that would do this;
You search and get no results in the Links DB; it then goes out and queries the ODP and returns the results in the template.

If this exists already could someone forward it to me. Thanks

Yea...It already exists...Go to:

http://lookhard.hypermart.net/links_mods/

The Mod was written by Bmxer.

This is also linked in the Resource Center, which should be the first place to check for modifications to LINKS scripts.

Look at the redirection script for Yahoo. Change the query string to ODP.

I have this working on my site, but I redirect people to Altavista's search using the altavista.cgi script.

Take a look:

vlib.anthrotech.com/bin/search.cgi

Search for Anthropology (which is a blocked search term). You will be redirected to my websearch script utilizing Altavista's engine.

The redirection within search.cgi can be rewritten for any search engine based on their query string.

Well, that is the URL of Bmxer in his profile and signature file. It is a problem with the Hypermart server, I guess.

Contact Bmxer directly then!

Eliot,

That's very cool....but how did you get the results to print out within your page? It works for me, however it just redirects me the keyword search on alta vista. Please enlighten me! :-)

The above is EXACTLY what I would like it to do. I got the "redirect" add-on to work, but the whole idea for my first message was to keep visitor inside my site. If they leave they are gone, probably forever. I would love for this add-on to parse out the results from other search engines (Would be happy with ODP) and display them in my page, in my format. Show me the way oh Perl gods?

Eliot,

Ok, so your using a different websearch script and just redirecting to that...I've got it now! Do you mind sharing the script or letting us know if it is available somewhere?

Thanks

Re: idea for ad on In reply to
Go to the Resource Center, download the AltaVista search script or the one located in the Links Modification forum.

Then you will have to edit the script to the look and feel of your site. Use straight HTML or sub-routine calls in the script. You cannot require other scripts in the LINKS Program to print other variables. This is what I've done and it works.

Re: idea for ad on In reply to
Using the Altavista.cgi script code that Widgetz provided to integrate it into search.cgi(modified of course because they didn't work for 2.0 originally), i have something like that, without even living my search.cgi script.

This will bring no results on my regular search

http://lookhard.hypermart.net/...earch.cgi?query=cats
So it will get directed to
http://lookhard.hypermart.net/look-bin/Look/search.cgi?query=cats&search=Altavista
If you search for
http://lookhard.hypermart.net/...ch.cgi?query=singles

It stays on my regular search subroutine in search.cgi.

Eliot,
i went to everyone of my mods and they each went to my mod site with a - in it.

I've read this thread:
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/scripts/forum/resources/Forum3/HTML/003832.html
and can't seem to follow it. Would anyone mind giving detailed instructions as how to get the altavista.cgi script working. I do not necessarily need to have it in the search.cgi script, I would just like to direct a keyword that is not found in my database to the altavista script.....very much like Eliot's is setup. I know it is very simple to do, however I am having problems just running the altavista.cgi script. I grabbed the script from the resource center under other scripts......maybe that is an outdated version? Also, what is the purpose of placing the altavista coding within the search.cgi script? How is that different from just redirecting the script if no keyword is found? Thanks for any and all replies.

That is probably true. Go to the Altavista Thread in the Modification Forum to get the most current script.

The purpose is that you can allow your users to choose whether they want to search your directory or the "web" via Altavista search engine.

Just add radio buttons to your search forms, and then people can choose from the get-go what search engine they want to use.

Again, look at my previous answer.

Uh....this is the only thread I could find pertaining to the altavista.cgi script:
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/scripts/forum/resources/Forum3/HTML/003832.html
and I didn't see the script I need there. If someone has the script, would they mind placing it as a text file somewhere? I do not whish to add the script to my search.cgi, I only want it to be queried when the keyword is not found in my database. Maybe I am trying to call the script wrong? To test is, can't it just be called via a search form? If not, what is the correct way to query the altavista script? Thanks.

Nevermind....I found it here:
http://www.linkondemand.com/altavista.txt
However, I would still like to know how to query it. Thank you.

If you would like to see this script in action. (which it works very well, even with compound searches) go to http:www.rvcorner.com and search for RV and then search for argonaught. The search for argonaught is courtesy of the meta.cgi. Any questions let me know

What do you mean you have problems "calling" it.

I have it working on my server:

vlib.anthrotech.com/bin/websearch.cgi

If you are wondering how to call it from the search.cgi file...use the Redirection Mod written by Bmxer in the Resource Center and replace the yahoo stuff with your Altavista script.

Hi,

I think I'm having problems with my server?? I'm not sure yet, but whenever I call the script with a search form I get a window that pops up and says 'document contains no data' as if the file is blank? Even if I just try to call the file the same thing happens. I also just tried to install widgetz review mod and when I go to run the install.cgi I get the same thing 'document contains no data' it won't even open the file. I'm by far an expert at coding, but I've done much more advanced things so I'm assuming it has to do with my server? I need to look into this a little more.

Thanks

Re: idea for ad on In reply to
Your problem is that your server does NOT have LWP installed on it. You need to have this Perl module in order for the altavista.cgi file (and other scripts that use LWP to parse data from other servers) to execute.

Thanks Eliot! Do you know where I can find the LWP perl module? I went here perl.com, but couldn't find it. It just might help getting it installed quicker on the server I am using.

Thank You

Re: idea for ad on In reply to
Yea...Go to www.cpan.org .

If this is a dedicated or a physical server you are maintaining, I would recommend upgrading your whole Perl package to the recent build of 5.004 from Active State ( www.activestate.com ). This build includes all the newest modules, including LWP.

If this is a virtual account, you will have to contact your Hosting Company and ask them to upgrade their Perl package.
