can't send mass mail

can't send mass mail
It worked yesterday but today when I try to send mail to all the link owners, IE says CANNOT FIND SERVER and NS says THE DOCUMENT CONTAINS NO DATA. When I validate a link I get no error so i have to assume that sendmail is working OK.

Any ideas?

Hi!

I have exactly the same situation. The e-mail sign-up is OK, I receive the e-mail info if I suggest a new link, the info letters and the "Rejection" e-mail goes out, no problem, but when I try to send out mail to the list, the whole thing stops! It says; "The page cannot be displayed" and on Netscape; "THE DOCUMENT CONTAINS NO DATA"

I've double checked everything but can't find the solution. If anybody knows what is wrong, please post it out, or send me an e-mail!

Thanks!

I guess the big guns don't work on Saturday. I next step is to install a fresh copy of nph-email.cgi and see if that does the trick.

Well that didn't work. We may have found ourselves a genuine bug.

Actually, nph-email.cgi does not send out the email, Mailer.pm does (it is called by nph-email.cgi). You might try uploading a fresh copy of that, making sure it is uploaded in ASCII.

I doubt that it is a bug in Links because, if it was, everyone would be experiencing it. Since this is not the case, it must be something to do with how sendmail is setup on your ISP.

First I'd like to restate that it did work yesterday. I uped a new mailer.pm that didn't work. Then I changed links.cfg to /usr/sbin/sendmail because some scripts seem to like that better. I don't really know what the difference is. That didn't work either. Then I took the -t off of /usr/lib/sendmail -t. No help. All done in ASCII and the permissions set properly. Guess I'll talk to my sysadmin tomorrow and see if he has a clue.

On a side note, validate e-mail doesn't seem to care whether links.cfg says /usr/sbin/sendmail or /usr/lib/sendmail -t. Both work equally well but mass e-mail still does not work.

Just for the record, "mailer.pm" should be "Mailer.pm" (note the capital M).

Along this same thread, can someone tell me what the -t switch does with sendmail?

I'VE GOT THE SOLUTION!!!

Hi everyone! I went through the whole thing again, step by step, but just could not find the problem. And then!!!!.............. I checked each of the *.cgi programs for settings and DING!!!... the damn nph-email.cgi program somehow wasn't set on 775, though I could swear I set it up properly! So, now IT IS WORKING!!!
Will, try to do the same trick, maybe that's the solution for you, too!

GOOD LUCK!

Re: can't send mass mail In reply to
The sendmail -t option tells sendmail to scan for To:, Cc:, and Bcc: lines and to remove the Bcc: line before transmission.

It should not be necessary to include the -t option in the sendmail setting in links.cfg because it is added by the mailing scripts before sendmail is called. Adding it in links.cfg could result in mailing problems.

I completely dled the links package again. Made the proper mods to links.cfg (my isp tells me the true path to sendmail is /usr/sbin/sendmail)and nph-email.cgi. Uped new copies of both those files plus Mailer.pm (notice the big M) in ascii. Chmoded nph-email to 755 and the other 2 to 777. Still no luck. Does anyone know if another file is involved in sending mass e-mail? Or is my proceedure wrong? I can send my mail using Excel & Access and another bulk mailer but it is a pain. About to give up on the mass e-mail feature in links. Too bad, it's much easier when it works.

willdeb,

Double check all the directory and file permissions against the list at http://www.gossamer-threads.com/...um2/HTML/000730.html and see if it helps. If your sendmail configuration is correct, there is no reason for Links not to send out the mass mailings as long as all the permissions are correct and everything is ASCII.

I finally found my answer. The path to nph-email.cgi was wrong in links.cfg. I must have forgotten to change it when I moved my Links site to it's own domain. Anyone experiencing this problem should check that path.
