What specifically are you having problems with? The files (.htaccess and .htpasswd) should be set to the following permissions:

-rw-r--r--

i can setup both files, but when prompted

to enter identification, it says authorization failed? and i try to use encrypted passwords but it always fails. I mean what do i have to do, i dont have telnet access so isnt ok just to do it through FTP. So far i have stopped the "hacker" from hackin my site, through my logs i can see that this person has been tryin to attack again, but he was stopped, as i have been also because i cant produce authorization for my own site.

please help,

b.t.w, i used all of your advice and my site is back up and running. so thats not bad, but now i just need to protect my baby, I can't get hacked 2x i'd die.

Contact your ISP for instructions on setting up password protection.

lyricsearch ,
Make sure that all of your paths are correct! I ahve a site on Virtualave.net and it seems to be doing fine, just no traffic!!
Make sure ,also, that you use absolute paths, exe.. /home/Your-Username/public_html/links/cgi-bin/admin
Otherwise it will be a waste of your time to try an dfigure it out another way.
Thier servers are weird considering that you dont have to do as much as other hosts, yet more than others..
Hope this helps, if not, contact me and Ill help..

Also, look in .htaccess and make sure .htpasswd is in the same place htaccess says it is.

I had a real problem setting up .htaccess and .htpasswd on Virtualave too. The tutorial I used for it said to place them in different directories and as long as you had it pointing to the right directory in your .htaccess file it should work. Well it wouldn't. I went and put them both in the same directory and it started working. Just a thought though.
