Erasing Links

Erasing Links
Hi,

Has anyone had a problem after an update with links being erased in the links.db file? I would start with 300 links in the links.db file then I add a couple and go to build again and end up with only 150 links?? If someone could point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it!

Here is a little history:

1) Everything was working fine, adding, updating, building.
2) Suddenly my server started sending me messages stating I was over my disk quota (which was not correct)
3) The problems began from here.
4) The server problem was fixed, but I still have a problem building.
5) After doing build all, it tells me my category pages are built, however the file sizes are all 0 containing no information.
6) I would assume that this would be a server problem, although it did try to upload just a test page with information and it was uploaded fine, so I think I can rule that out.

I know this doesn't make to much sense and if I need to provide more information please let me know.

Thank You

What is the permission of your links.db file? Make sure it is 666 or Read and Write permissions for the following users and groups:

Owner
Group
Everyone

Hey Eliot, thanks for responding!

Yeah, I do have the permissions set correctly on all files and directories. The links.db is 666 rw-rw-rw. Acually, I even added else { chmod 0666, $db_links_name; } to the nph-build.cgi because it would change the permissions after building! And that does work, meaning it does stay at 666 now.

I've been having a problem with my server though....for some reason it thinks that I am over my disk quota, and my host said he fixed the problem. And it was fixed for a short period, but it seems to keep returning after I build the database. I don't think that the script could cause this, or could it? My host want's to pass the blame on the script!

Also, after some links are erased from the link.db file, I have been replacing it with the backup because I do lose 50-100 everytime I rebuild.....I'm assuming I'm doing it right by just replacing the good list with the (erased) list and then adjusting the linksid.txt to the appropriate #?

I'm at a total loss! I had it running perfect, and then all of the sudden without making any changes, all of this erasing started to happen! I'm thinking it's most likely a problem on the servers end, but maybe this has happened before? Anyway I would really appreciate any input!

Thank You

Oh yeah, also is happening is, all the pages/categories (new, cool, categories, etc.) that are built are 0 file size. Once again this leads me to believe that there is a problem with the server! I've sent him so many emails but he doesn't seem to give me an answer as to what is going on!! This sucks. :-(

I've also noticed that the category folders that are automatically made are drwxrwxrwx and the Cool and New are drwxr-xr-x

But once again, this is how they were when it was running fine! So I don't think I need to change the permissions on the Categories?

If you have your permissions set correctly and the paths to your files in links.cfg file are set correctly, then it really is a bug in your web server.

I would re-contact your ISP and ask them for assistance.

Yeah, that's what I'm going to do! I was pretty positive it was a server problem, but I just wanted to make sure no one else has had this sort of problem in the past. He will most likely try to blame the script, but the bottom line is that I did have it working fine for a few days without any problem and then all of the sudden without making any changes these things started happening! So, once again I appreciate your responses.

BTW....I really like what you've done with Links on your site. I noticed your using additional <inputs on the search, what exactly have you added, if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks

Well, I have paid for some of the add-ons and I have worked in confidence with some programmers to produce the additional search options.

Wink

Am I going to release the mods? Probably not.
I would have to obtain permission from the programmers I have been working with. And I don't really feel comfortable releasing my search.cgi file for free when I have invested money into it.

Sorry.
