Customized Links2

Customized Links2
Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post but I don't see any harm.

Basically I am authorized to re-sell any GT script and seeing as there has been a lot of interest in a highly customized Links2 "out-of-the-box" then I thought it may be a good idea to create it.

I am looking for mod authors to contact me if they would like their mod included in the script.

Each author will receive commission per sale of the script. I have yet to decide on a price for the script but it will obviously be over the basic license fee of $150 (the customized version will include a Links2 license).

The size/complexity of the mod will affect the rate of commission you get.

I feel kinda hypocritical after all that stuff with mycgiscripts but I feel this is a slightly "different" approach.

Anyway, if anyone is interested, please post your ideas/thoughts here or if you are a mod author please email gt@wiredon.net

I will be selling the script from WiredON and will set up a mod authors area so they can track sales/commission.

I'm pretty sure I am allowed to do this but if anyone has concerns please let me know.

I may think of more things to add later so I'll reply to this post if something pops into my head.

Thanks for reading

.....oh.....if an advanced user is interested in helping me put this together then please email me also.

Cool, I like the sound of it. I was going to do something like this, but GT put restrictions on the re-distribution of it (only allowed to let registered users have it). I decided that it wasn't worth doing it due to that, as I wasn't really interested in trying to 'sell' the script. I won't bother submitting my mods to you Paul, as I'm sure you can write them all in like 5 mines Wink. Most of mine are very simple to write!

Good luck

As long as they do what they are supposed to then yes. Obviously I don't want to be selling a buggy version of Links2 so as long as there are no bugs then yes, submit it.

I'm going to re-write my mods soon, as soon as I successfully transfer one of my sites and complete a few custom jobs.

I'll email you when I get them done.

Cheers, Paul!

Great idea.

One suggestion to streamline development/maintenance of Mods would be to integrate a plugin type of system that is used with Links SQL.

I imagine that the current structure of this "MOD" system you are creating is manually reviewing code and installing it. Too much work if you ask me.

Yeah a plugin system would be great - I may look at attempting something like that over the next few weeks although I'm not sure how successful it'd be Smile

A basic system shouldn't be too hard really - obviously it wouldn't be as complexed as Links SQL with all the syntax checking and editing functions but I could get an installation/uninstallation system working I expect.

Yeah it is all manual currently but I don't mind :)

Well, I didn't get much of a response so I'm afraid I'm going alone.

I got like 2 emails which isn't worth my while so I'm going to add my own mods to the code and re-write the others...like the image for rating and 3 levels of new graphic etc...

I'm not sure I need to ask permission from the original authors seeing as I'll be using new code but if anyone has any specific concerns please post here or email me.

just some thoughts:

Did you email the mod authors? Ummm, I don't see a problem if you're re-writting the code. I mention this just because lot's of folks haven't been seen for ages. Like Bobsie, what happened to him?

If someone owns a Links2 licences or even a LinksSQL licence -- what happens then? Will you offer a moded version minus the price of the licence?

Support? Ahhh, since you're probably will get G-Forum, will you run support through your site or ahem her at GT?

Isn't it worth more to you to do a mod job let's say US$30 (or what ever the going rate is) per mod installation?

Cool idea ... Cool just wondering about the tedious issues only.

I'm only re-writing fairly recent mods and those by people who have a chance to see this thread to raise concerns.

Yes, if they can prove they own a license I'll provide them with the modded copy for the fee minus the license cost.

Any questions regarding problems with the code I added can be emailed to me or posted on my ickle forum :) .....general Links2 questions should be posted here as normal.

No. If I think the demand will be ok then it is even worth my while to do free installations of the mod.[/quote]

Cool

Should be worth getting since adding about 15 of the most popular mods took me close to 2 weeks ... hehe, it was great learning experience but it sure is a pain to do each one individually -- check and test it -- find small errors -- deal with what ever comes up and then do this over and over until you get to a point where you're happy.

I remember lots of folks who used to ask about which mods were necessary and such.

So what are you adding in? If you want I could mail/PM you the list of what I added and/or was going to add to use as a reference for what some people would like to see or wish to have. I spent 2-3 days just going through the resource area and thinking which was importand or just nice to have.

looking forward to the release.
