Backing up Links 2.0 files and DB
Hello,

I am running Links on my own FreeBSD Unix server and haven't had the time to add a backup server into the server farm yet.

Which files and/or .db files do I need to be sure I downlaod and keep a backup in case my server goes south ot I crash the database
until other arrangements can be made?

Thanks,

Dave

LINKS automatically via the nph-build.cgi file backup the following files:

1) links.db
2) categories.db
3) email.db

These are the most pertinent files to back-up for restore jobs. But I would also recommend backing up the following directories:

1) ratings
2) hits

Also, make sure that you have backups of these other files:

1) linksid.txt
2) categoryid.txt

Other than that, the default LINKS files should be fine, unless you have modded them. Then you will have to keep back-up of the modded files.

Eliot,

Thanks for the reply on both my NetObjects question and the backup question.

Okay, this can be a stupid question, but I'd better ask it anyway... In order to back up links, I always copy the 'data' directory from (links/admin) in ASCII.

Is that a smart idea?

I mean, can I then, if my server would crash, completely restore my website?

Thanks.

Well, you would also need to restore links.def, links.cfg, categories.def as well.

Yet, if you have made changes to your template files, site_templates.pl, etc., you will need to save these files as well.

I decided to get around this by just downloading everything except the pages that are built. That way I'm sure I can restore without problems. I think Smile
Doesn't take very long to do it.

Thanks,
