Hits directory question
Hi folks,
I have been running Links 2.0 at my web site (http://www.geeknoize.com) for about a year and a half. I download the data directory periodically for back up purposes.

Today when I downloaded the data directory, there were a bunch of numbered files in the hits directory. Up until this point there has only been an index file in there.

I haven't changed any settings so I am curious why my Links DB is suddenly creating these files and what they are for? I guess to keep track of the # of hits? But if so, why are they only appearing now?

Sorry if this question is a bit silly, but I'm not especially techy and just curious what is going on...

Thanks!!!

It always creates hits there. It's quicker and more efficient to just write the hits to a separate file rather than going through and updating links.db each time a site is cliked on. Also if the links.db was updated each time a link was clicked on (jump.cgi) imagine how much slower jump.cgi would run!

These hits are updated and the files deleted each time you rebuild the directory.

Good Luck!

You're right, I just rebuilt and now all the files are gone again. I was concerned that maybe something was malfunctioning, but I guess all is well...
Thanks!

I assume you had a point in quoting a whole post?

Yes i was actually - but forgot that this forum has some disfunctions also in the new NS7 and i believe the disfunction here is (i saw it before happening) that when you hit "quote" it only quotes without adding the new text.

Here it is again:

"These hits are updated and the files deleted each time you rebuild the directory."

Is in my Links2 no longer so. I have uncommented all the build stuff that would build those "NEW" "Hits" and RATINGS" folder in the main dir and i guess that is a side effect of it????

In my Links2 they simply build up, a single file per click on any link or so in the "hits" folder in "data" and there is no deleting anymore ecxept for manual.

I myself do not have any interest in checking how many hits i got and if there was any way to completely stop that counting of hits please let me know (if you know).

I have already trying myself through a bunch of things in nph-build and links.cfg but so far nothing has stopped it, i also deleted the index_count file but that was of course built right away again.........

So in short my question is:

How to stop the counting of hits (clicks on links) all together???

Its easy. In link.html, simply remove the jump.cgi link, and replace it with just <%URL%>
