Database deleted

Database deleted
Hi

Major problem and any advice is appreciated. This morning I was validating links on my site. I still had a number of links to validate (200 left) but given I had just reviewed and vaidated about 50 I thought I would do a build. I build all and the scrip ended with an error after do the "new" section. I tried again and no luck. I have had this problem before which has been solved by re-uploading the nph-build. So I did. After re-uploadeding I ran the scrip and all seemed to work. BUT the majority of the database dissapeared (all but 101 links) and the remaining links that had to be validated had all dissapeared. ie over 1000 links in total dissapeared.

Also a number of links have been submitted since and each new submission is being given the ID code 1.

Any thoughts is appreciated.

Restore your database backups and make sure linksid.txt reflects the number of links in the database.

Paul,

Thanks. One step ahead of you. I have asked my host to reload from the backup.

However, two questions if I may.

1. Any idea why this happened?
2. Should I manually amend the links.txt file or just check it after the backup ofthe databse is reloaded and I have re-built?

Manually check linksid.txt before you rebuild and also make sure the ID's in links.db look in order - make sure there are no duplicates.

I'm not sure why things like this happen to be honest. Once something messes up then the problem seems to escalate until your whole database corrupts like this.

Paul,

Checked the file and it has says 1. So this number should correspond with the last link in the database plus 1?

In terms of the corruption I am hoping that my host is not the problem as I downloaded my backup and the data does not appear to be there either which is kind of very worriesome. I hope they have a backup from the 29th....

If you have 100 links in links.db then linksid.txt should have 100 in it.

Have you checked for backups in /admin/backups ?

Yep there are backups there. How can I backup from these?

Just rename them to the appropriate file name (ie remove the date) and put them back into /admin/data

Paul,

When you say the linkssid.txt should have the number of links in it. Do you mean the actual number of links or the current ID number that you are up to. If you mean number of links your up to is there a way to get this number without building? Its just that last time I looked there were 799 links but the ID I am up to is 3051.

Oh... Many thanks for all your help so far. It is greatly appreciated.

Re: Database deleted In reply to
The number of links and the ID you are up to should be the same.

eg

links.db

1|bla....
2|bla...
3|bla...

linksid.txt

3

If they aren't then set it to the ID you are up to.

Unfortunately a large number of links get rejected from my site (ie that s why the big difference in user id and number of links). If they should be the same is there a fix for this?

Paul,

Many thanks. Backup done and fixed. Lost all the links waiting validation but at least I still have the database of existing links.

One last question. I am getting the following error when I run build all.

Unable to copy links backup. Reason: No space left on device

Does this mean I need to clean out my backup directory and also could this have soemthing to do with why the database was deleted?

Yes...you should download all the backup files to your local PC, then delete all the backup files in the backup folder.

Probably you have exceeded your disk quota. Try to delete some of the backup files, just keep the last couple of days. Btw, it is also not necessary to keep all static What's New pages (only those within your new_cutoff range). Deleting these files can save you a lot of disk space.
