Building problems - timeout!

Building problems - timeout!
Hi

I am continuing having problems building Links pages. There are no error messages appearing and the browsers just stop during the building of What's New pages. I have tested both IE and Netscape.

Any help or tips are greatly appreciated.

This is a common problem but is caused more by the configuration of the server than the Links scripts. Your server is timing-out and killing the script because it is taking too long to complete a process.

If you have telnet access to your account, login and build it online rather than from the web.

The following tips will help with future web builds:

1. Use span pages by turning it on in links.cfg.

2. Adjust the number of links per page from the default of 10 to a higher number (I use 25 on my site).

3. When looking at your Category database, try to keep the amount of links in any one category to the lowest number possible. This is done by the judicious use of Subcategories. For example, if you have a large number of links under one category, the script may time out building the page(s) for that category. Try to create Subcategories for the main Category and move the links to it so that the links are not listed all under one page.

I hope this helps.

Hi Bobsie

I followed your advices exactly and everything is exactly perfect.

I did the building from the Telnet and
added 25 to categories and it worked in first attempt.

If anyone out there is thinking about using Links then I can tell you it is a masterpiece. It has solved many publishing problems for me already. A real time saver!!

Best wishes and thanks for the support!

Hi

I learned from my problem with timeout while building that it is best to build via Telnet. It is faster and works errorless but
only necessary if your links database is big.

You need to know the root url of your server system and the path to your links program.

At the Telnet prompt you type something like:
perl /dom/usr/domain/cgi-bin/links/admin/nph-build.cgi

Don't use it exactly as is, you need to adjust it to your server.

I hope this helps.
