Bandwidth Issue.

Bandwidth Issue.
Yea I got my Links working now... I have 20 listed per page and 11 pages in total.
My bandwidth just jumped from my normal 100GB/Average a month to 160/GB a month. This is way way too much for me to use. Any ideas in how to bring this down back to how it was before?

Now I have looked at all the posts on this board related to bandwidth and I did read from one guy that the search.cgi takes alot of bandwidth.

So I took down my search engine and will leave off for 24 hours to see if I can get alot of Bandwidth improvement.

This isnt fun when I have spent the past 3 whole days of my life getting this thing up and running only to find out it eats to much bandwidth :c(

What are some other causes of it taking so much bandwidth? I would like to know.

- jump.cgi
- rate.cgi

Any script that builds temp files in your server account.

And also, I would try building your directory off-line and then FTP the updated files...see if that makes a difference.

Hey thanks for the response!

Now I know that jump.cgi is apart of my whole script pretty much so how would I go by not having it create temp files?

Also I have rating disable...only thing going is the download counter which I think is part of jump.cgi. Is this what I need to disable in order to control my Bandwidth again?

That would help...but you would lose the "Hit Counters" as you put it.

Well by all means I want to disable it...having the "hit counters" is not that big of a deal.

I am now up to 179GB/Month... How do I go by disabling it?

Please help :c)

Thanks

Actually instead of just cutting out the hit counter, is there anyway I can cut out the whole jump.cgi file?

I really do not need it for anything. And if its eating up over 100GB of extra bandwidth then I HAVE to get rid of it.

Simply REPLACE

Code:

<%db_cgi_url%>/jump.cgi?ID=<%ID%>

in your link.html file with:

Code:

<%URL%>

Then delete the jump.cgi from your server.

BTW: If you're that concerned with BANDWIDTH...I would recommend seeking a more flexible hosting company OR you can forget about having a lot of interactive options in your web site.

Good luck!

Well actually my server is very flexible. I am limited to 75GB of bandwidth each month until I go over that amount and I have to fork out another $3.50 for each GB used... and at the rate I am going at 1000kb/s that is 300GB a month. Alot of cash.

Reason well because I dont have a normal website... hosting costs more for porn and warez :c)

I thank you very much for your help...you have made me very happy and I can sit back on my lazy butt once more and bring in g's :c)

Well hmmm my bandwidth is still around 300GB/month here.

WAY WAY too much.

Jump.cgi has been totally disabled. search.cgi is disabled. What else could be causing this?

Read your access logs to find out which pages/programs are being accessed the most and their size. All this bandwidth is not necesesarily from Links. It could just be increased traffic.

Are you sure you dont mean 300MB rather than 300GB???

300GB seems a bit too much.

Someone I know has 0.5GB of space and gets 10,000MB bandwidth per month.

You are saying you get 300,000MB bandwidth?

I don't see how in the world your figures are possible!!! 160GB for a links site!!! How much traffic are you receiving??? I run an adult links site that is has over 1400 links in the database, I update at least daily, use all of the functions of Links (plus some of the mods), serve banner ads, and receive 25,000+ hits a month, and only use about 5GB of bandwidth a month!!! Plus, you would have to have an endless bank account to be able to afford to even run a site like that!!! My host gives me 7GB before they start charging additional!!!
