Thanks for the information.

However, it is unclear whether they are actually releasing their codes in a manner that you can keep the look and feel of your web site.

If so, this would be nicer than having to use LWP to connect to Altavista's database...less intensive on local servers, and also a nice way to allow people without LWP to use Altavista's engine within their sites.

This is not open source, this is simply a search engine providing access to its database (which other search engines have been doing for years). This particular program is an affiliate relationship, where the person gets $0.03 per click through for displaying the search engine box on your Website.

This isn't really my thing, I just posted it because I saw some interest in AV here. The article was a bit muddled, but I believe there was more than an affiliate program, let me see...

There was a look and feel page without redirection...

here's that:

and some free downloads...
here:

maybe more...
I don't know if these are scripts or what; I haven't checked into it, but on the surface, it seems to offer more than just an affiliate program (which is not that attractive anyway).

I'm not the source for this, but those who've been discussing this topic can find out if there's anything useful in it or not at av.com.

The first link leads to information about how to purchase a customized version which allows you to do those things.

The second link leads to a version limited to indexing only up to 3,000 documents, and is for personal or evaluation use only.

Neither version is considered open source by nearly any definition of the term. This was posted and debated on slashdot, but I do appreciate the links!
