Using Multiple Category Templates

is it possible to just specify the category template rather than having to list all the sub-cat's?
I just need to have a different main category page, with all the sub-pages following the main 'category' template...

I believe that if you specify a template for a top category that all that category's subcats use that template.

Have you tried it?
