Comments 3
I haven't had the time recently to look at Links 2, post answers etc...

I have had a bit of spare time over the weekend and so have worked on a improved version of the Comments 2 mod I posted a while back. The new version will include the following extras/alterations:

All of the comments_add.cgi, comments_modify.cgi, comments_display.cgi etc.. will be on just one script (so it's a easier to install)
Users will need to register before they can post a comment/review
User profiles will be available, ie. date they registered, number of posts etc...
Improved way of retrieving the comments for a particular link.
The option to choose how many comments are shown per page and where ratings breakdowns are displayed or not.
A 'List all' option of comments.
A few minor changes here and there to make so hopefully users will have less problems with it.

Maybe a few other things if I think of anything else.

I'll try to post it fairly soon (time permitting)

Good Luck!

Glenn

Hey that's cool!
you MODs are the best, do they user HAVE to register to post comments?
or can you do that as an option???
because my users hate to register on another program...
and, it's going to be easy to update?
or do we have to install everything from zero?
hope you can answer me those questions, thanks man ^_^

I loved commments2. My only problem with it was that it prevented multiple comments from the same IP address. And I read that comments3 will require the user to register...

Could you set both of those as optional features that we can turn on and off depending on our needs.

Anonymous comments are fine....
Multiple comments from the same user are fine....

BTW, Glad to see you back...

Us poor hacks need an occasional word of wisdom from you gurus...!

Oh yeah it also has the following:

Can choose how many comments you want displayed on each page and if you want a ratings breakdown displayed.
Can link to a page from category.html which displays only comments for sites in that category.
A new icon is displayed next to each comment that's less than 7 days old.
A page listing the new comments can be displayed.
Time the comment/review was submitted is displayed
Retreival of comments uses the unique ID instead of url.
The persons IP is no longer checked when submitting a comment, instead it checks if that user has commented on that site before.

do they user HAVE to register to post comments?
or can you do that as an option???

Yeah they have to register to post a comment. I figured it'd be nice to have user profiles. That part could be got rid of if you don't want it. Or you could juse make them give a password instead of registering other details.

it's going to be easy to update?

Yeah should be quite easy for you to update. The only templates and subs you should need to update are comment.html comment2.html and the comments_breakdown.html.

Change the links in link.html to comments3.cgi
And change the pages built by comments3.cgi to look like your site.

You'll prob need to alter comments.db as I've changed comments.def

Could you set both of those as optional features that we can turn on and off depending on our needs.

I'll put up a second shorter version without the register function and files. Cause if you don't need the register function you won't need some of the subs in comments3.cgi

Good Luck!

Hey, I just wanna congratulate you for those great MODs you make. The idea of searching a comment using ID and not URL is great! because if the URL (in comments 2) ends with .cgi or .pl, well it just does not work. Thanks for everything!

No problem!

You can get it here (plus the version without the register option):
http://findarom.emusanet.com/...nts3/comments30.html

Should all work okay, there's a few bits I'd like to improve but I've run out of time to spend on it so I'll post it as it is for now. (any future alterations will be easy to add onto it)

I haven't spent much time on the templates cause I figure you'll want to mae them like your sites.

Also posted an alteration I did a while back but never got round to posting. One script combining tell ya friend 1 and 2 plus a feedback form.

Since posting it I've altered it a bit so I'd recommend anyone thinking of installing it to wait till this weekend when I'll post the updated version. It will then also have:

Page spanning for all sections including new comments page etc..
On each page it says 'displaying comments 2-4' etc.....
Also a few other minor adjustments.

Good Luck!

Glennu,

If someone forgets his/her password and try to modify a review. Is there a way of password retrieving?

I am assuming users have to register for once to add or modify any of their reviews. I mean they don't have to register everytime they want to add a review.

Can't wait to install it. Thank you.

Pagla

There will be a way of password retreiving. When they register they will get an email with their details.

Have just added an option for them to get their info mailed to them if they forget it.

Yeah they only need register once.

Good Luck!

You have greate mods there. I'm delighted with them.

I have some question about mod that is showing Site Stats, Site Ratings and Predicted Yearly Stats.

Is this mode available somewhere or it's just custom made ?

Thank you and keep posting such great mods.

And at the scrip it says:

sub get {
#-------------------------------------------------------------------
if ($in{'ID'} =~ /^\d+$/) {
require "$db_lib_path/links.def";
my (%rec) = &get_record ($in{'ID'});
&site_html_comments2_add (%rec);
}
else {
&site_html_comments2_error ("Unkown Link ID: $in{'ID'}");
}
}

I don't know what's wrong on it? can someone please tell me what's wrong? I also made all the modifications that say at the page of comments 3.

It's posted now, (I was going to post it on Fri but I haven't had access to the internet untill today).

The example url have changed (cause of a few new extensions needed).
Example of current version comments 3.1 is bellow
http://findarom.emusanet.com/...;number=8&days=8

The pag with the latest updates and files is the same as before:

http://findarom.emusanet.com/...nts3/comments30.html

new features added in Comments 3.1:

On each page of results new comments are displayed first and then the ones below are sorted by rating.
(Can also sort by the other ratings, title or category
There's also a page which will display the last X number of comments
Also a basic page listing the categories so users can view comments by category
Also a page which displays all the registered users

version without the register option also updated.

Might be a few things you come accross that you'll need to alter but I've tested comments 3.1 on my site and it's working fine.

Good Luck!

Undefined subroutine, it means a sub is refered to called site_html_comments2_add which doesn't exist.

You need to add the extra subs to your site_html_templates.pl. and upload the templates to your template direcory.

This question has been asked before. Search the forum for site stats.

Can you add in the admin panel a "validate" feature for comments added like there is in Links 2.0 for links added?

No yet, think I looked at implementing it on comments 2 in the past and had problems with it. I'll have a look at it today.

Had a quick look and haven't come up with anything yet so I'll leave it with the current validation function as I don't really have much spare time left to spend on it at the moment.

'Unkown Tag: include top.txt'

Yeah I use an include command on mine. To get rid of it just edit the comments_add.html etc... templates and delete the <%include top.txt%> code at the top of each page (you'll also need to get rid of the <%include bottom.txt%> as well).

Good Luck!

About Site Stats. I've looked around this forum but all I found is this thread
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/...=25&Old=allposts
which is quite hard to understand.
Is there any full mod for this stats?

Thank you.

There is no mod for site stats.

Not sure what else I can add on it (I'd explained it as clearly as I could before in that post).

What don't you understand about it?
