non english cat name & add.cgi
Hello,

I have been searching for few days now and seen several posts in regard of viewing the non english cat name while using add.cgi, however, none of them is complete or clear.

Can anyone please advice on how to do that for a novice perl user? [:/]

Hello Elke,

Thanks for replying.

Actually I have installed the non english mode (http://www.gossamer-threads.com/...urces/jump.cgi?ID=28) a long time ago and everything is working fine. The only problem I have is when a user is adding a new link (add.cgi) the cats are showing in English. What I need is a hack to show the cats in non english. However, I need simple english step by step instruction for a NOVICE user Wink

Tariq,

there is no solution to your problem, at least none has been found so far. The categories in the dropdown fields cannot be displayed in non-English characters.

Like Thomas said this doesn't seem to have been solved yet.

I spent like a week fiddling with this to no avail.

I figured out that unix doesn't like to have directories names to have no roman character names.
Now, if somebody figured out how to fiddle with a hidden input method .... that correlates the chosen non-english name with the english name things would be dandy.

It seems like a simple task to do but ....

You can get the categories to show in non-english though. Just not that dang drop down Frown

Dear Thomas/QooQ,

Thank you for replying.

Yes, UNIX does not like none roman character names, however, this is not the issue.

I am 100% sure that it can be done. I have seen it on several sites. I am not a programmer, but I think the hack should call the non english cat names stored in place of the english cat names to show in the drop list.

I have found some info in the forum regarding this, however, it's not very clear or not complete.

I hope some of the advance Hackers can spare few mints and point us to the correct way of doing this.

Hi again,

Here is what I found. On an Arabic site using links2 (http://www.swalif.net) and using non english on his drop menu, the webmaster posted at his forum (http://www.swalif.net/...amp;highlight=links2) that he is replacing
<%Category%> in add.cgi with the following:

<SELECT NAME="Category" SIZE=1>
<option value="personal">++ personal in arabic++
<option value="computer">+++ computer in arabic +++
<option value="computer/books">- books in arabic
<option value="computer/host">- web hosting in arabic
<option value="computer/magazine">- Magz in arabic
.
.
.
. and so on
.
.
.
</SELECT>

This will work fine, however, you will need to change it everytime you add a new cat or sub-cat.
Crazy
I'll keep on looking for a real hack in the script Tongue

Regards,

BTW: http://www.swalif.net is a good source for scripts hacking tips if you can read Arabic.

I agree that's not the most optimal solution.

But ... I wonder if there is a way to in db_utils.pl sub build_select_field to call the field to build the directory name and then at the same time call the field for the same corresponding non-english name.

I spent hours on that sub but since I can't program I never did figure it out.
