My Links vs Portal Links

My Links vs Portal Links
Hello folks,

I have been reading up and trying to understand the differences between these mods

1.mylinks
2.portal links1
3.portal links2

I think Ican see that
"mylinks" allows users to store their favs without signing in and that Portal links 2 does the same but requires sign in

Anyone know more about these?

The original MY LINKS mod is not available, so your choices are either of the Portal Links versions.

If you referring to the flat file without login version that Drew wrote (along with the Portal Links version), then you are correct that is one of the advantages of that Modification.

Good luck!

I wrote a mod pretty much identical to MyLinks that _is_ available :)

So you just need to decide if you want users to login or not.

Like I already stated...the original Mod is NO longer available...I didn't say anything about your mod, no need for emphasizing the text with underlines...hehe!

I was actually pointing out to Kemetonline that there is another option available and not just portalinks as you suggested.

I have found its really hard sometimes to read peoples expressions and attitudes online without all the inflections and non verbal clues.

From the POV of a new comer to this forum..you are all great---SO THERETongue

Difference between the original MyLinks mod and my PortalLinks series...

PortalLinks 1: very little, other than authorship, code style, and templates

PortalLinks 2: improved coding, flatfile database, user login system, cookies only used for storing logins

PortalLinks 3: same as 2, except uses mySQL.

hm... untill I get all of my stuff moved to my new host you won't be able to access my PortalLinks mods anyway.

Hi all,
Sorry if this is dumb question. Where can I get the 'flatfile'(need login) version? Blush

Thanks in advance.
thanks for keeping the
internet a better place.

The portal.cgi mods are no longer accessible for free download (because it was distributed without my permission...). License is $15, which includes installation on your server. If interested, please send an email to drew@camelsoup.com.

GREAT!! But can you let me know how does the users database work? I need to integrate this with my existing YaBB forum member's database. Thanks.

basicly there is a database with all the user data in it. then each user has a seperate database for their links. with a little bit of hacking (changing the login routines to point to yabb's codes), you should be able to integrate the two programs pretty easily. (in fact, I did a yabb integration for somebody about 6 months ago.)
