resource usage
Hi

I am getting a dedicated server

P111 1GHZ
256mb SDRAM
20gb hard disk
10mb bandwidth per month

If I am running Gossamer mail and a couple of links sites(low usage)

When do you think I would hit problems.

And do you think mod_perl would help. (free install from the isp.)

The users figures would be something like.

1,000 users

3,000 users

5,000 users

Free service no pop or forwarding and 2mb of space.

Thanks in advance

Definitely go with mod_perl

I hope you mean 10GB and not MB :)

Yeah, 10gb not 10mb. :)

I remeber a thread about memory usage per instance or process (can't remember the correct term).

I seem to remember it worked out at 4mb per process.

So is 256mb enough to start with?

I'd say 256 is ok but is the minimum really. You have a pretty quick server there so if you pile on the RAM with mod_perl it will be a beast.

Yeah

With there quoted upgades going to a gig of ram will cost about $500, no extra monthly.

Sounds good to me

kind regards

Paul

Thats who i'm quoting off!

They are offering that spec at £193 per month plus vat.(10gb Bandwidth at rackspace.co.uk)

I might be confused about the upgrades. :)

I chatted with one of their opeartives, they set up mysql, php,dbi modules,mod_perl free.

Checked whether they ran Gossamer scripts they said yes. (links & Email)

Hi,

That machine would be just fine to run Gossamer Mail. You could get a lot more users on there without having to increase the hardware.

Cheers,

Hmmm strange that there's such a price difference.

I had a feeling you were using rackspace - that's what made me go and look at the site.

After 5 ISP in the last year, I need to go with people that know what they are doing.

I prefer co-location myself.

If you are thinking of $500/month, that is $6000/yr

For about $4000-5000 you could buy a good server and then pay $200/month for about 65GB bandwidth.

That is about the same price for year one as the dedicated server but only $2400/year from then on. The savings could be used to upgrade hardware etc.

My thing is clients.

Its looking like next year every client is going to want their own machine!

I need a ISP that only deals with dedicated.

Co-Loc is cool just not for these clients.
