Feature request: Not required, requested :-)
Greetings,

When a user tries to sign up, it would be nice that if the login name they are trying; then sends them to a new join form with 3-5 suggestions on names that are available.

Thank you,

Avery

Hello!

But this you can do it in Html, NO?

I was planning to do this like most other websites, but in Html, I thought and never came to the idea to place a post here.

May be this can be a pop menu in the templates and then all rest normal.

Nope, it would be a bit more complexed than that as you'd probably have to query the database to check that the options are also not already taken.

Hi,

This could be done pretty easily with a global tag. How would you want to come up with alternate names? Just add 1, 2, 3 to the end or something similiar?

Cheers,

Alex

yes, but when you add the number to the end; it would need to be checked against the database to make sure it is opened.

Thanks Alex,

Hello Paul!

May be you are right.

But what does not get in my head is how can one produce a list of alternative names?

They have to be inserted as a default offer options. Like for e.g.

xx_yy or xx-yy or xxx1 or 1xxx etc

So the default values remain common for the offer. Hence the user needs to select first by a pop-up menu, and then this "Selection" may be then queried with the database, if available.

Users are UNIQUE and so inserting if not there should be any problem.

If unavailable, then all the unavailable Usernname options are purged and remaining to be presented.

If the programming is not there, then the error message can be produced to inform them that the user name is already taken, please choose anathor from the option.

Sorry, I was just looking for an answer on how to shut roaming
off in RedHat 7.1. I know this isn't the support area for
that product, but when I installed the POP mail portion of
GM it allows users to use my SMTP server. Alex, explained
that this is because of roaming. Does anyone know of a link
where there is step by step instructions on how to shut roaming off.

This will be a great solution for anyone who installs the
POP mail portion of GM.

Thank you for your time,

Avery L. Brooks

Hi,

The POP plugin does not affect SMTP mailing. There must be something changed in sendmail that allowed users to send messages (are you using inetd with the pop plugin? If so, did you alter any of the smtp lines?).

The pop plugin does not touch sendmail or anything that would affect relaying. You may want to look at:

http://www.sendmail.org/faq/section3.html#3.27

for help on setting relaying properly.

Cheers,

Alex

Alex,

I guess I really don't understand then. I thought you said
when a user logs into POP then on my machine they are getting
the ability to roam. I didn't set that up, it must be a default
somewhere.

I did look at the link above but there is no section on how to either
limit the security on roaming or shut it totally off. I will
continue to look for the answer, but I just wanted you to
understand where I am coming from. The POP plugin helps users
log into a POP server created for GM, which then gives them
permissions to use the SMTP server if roaming is activated.

I thought this might be good for people to know, so that a
spammer doesn't find one of our systems and sign up for an account
get the POP access and then start spamming everyone.

Thanks for all your help, when I find the answer on roaming I will
post it to this thread.

Avery

I didn't realize you were using the Gossamer Mail POP server though. If you are using a regular POP server that came with your system, it's quite common to have it setup that way. If you are using our optional POP server, then there is no way it affects sending mail via sendmail.

Sorry about the mixup!

Alex

Alex,

Sorry, let me explain a little better.
I have sendmail installed on my system. I did not have IMAP,
or (better known as) POP installed on my system. When I
installed the GM POP mail portion, I was forced to install
IMAP in order for my system to recieve POP.

I changed my main POP mail server to a different port, and
made GM port 110 so users can download their mail from me.
When I checked my mail as a GM user through the POP mail
it allows me access to outgoing sendmail. When I do not log
into the GM POP mail server it does not allow me to relay
mail through my server.

Hence, I am looking for this "roaming" feature in sendmail that
you speak of. I looked in the direction that you pointed me
with the link; but there is no direct answer on how to
disable "Roaming" really they don't talk about it much.

Thank you so much for all your help, you have gone far past
what other companies do; that includes the big ones...
