How do YOU handle SPAM?

How do YOU handle SPAM?
Hi,

I still can't figure out how to handle non existent users with GM!! I receive around 2000 mails a day to none existent users!!

At first I enabled the bounce feature. This sent back the GM generated bounced error message. Now as 95% of the e-mails I receive are SPAM messages the sender has a false e-mail address. This results in that i.e. Hotmail will send me a message back saying that the sender does not exist. As the GM bounced message lacks a "reply-to" fields in the header I only get back around 30% of these mails. The remaining 30% still figure out where the mail came from.
The result is that I receive 600 error messages a day from my SMTP server!! What is also concerning is that Hotmail and other services might think that I AM sending SPAM to them and blacklist me!!!

The main problem is that the GM setup uses a catch-all mail which means that the sender of the SPAM message will never receive a proper SMTP error message.

I have talked to Gossamer about this problem. They suggested that they could do some custom work that would cost me some money and have GM automatically delete incoming mails. First, if this is the only solution to handle SPAM IT SHOULD BE INCULDED WITH GM. Second, I don't like the fact that the sender doesn't receive a error message.

The solution I have now is that I daily login to GM and manually delete all inserted undeliverables. Is this really the only solution to handle SPAM??

If someone has some other working setup please let me know!!
I am sorry to constantly bring this up, but I am going mad with all the SPAM messages!!!!

thanks

I only bounce messages that are too big - which also includes if a users mailbox is full (i wish they were seperate settings).

I don't insert any messages.

That means the spam just disappears - nothing to clear in the admin area.

What setting do you use for non existent users? Do the mails get automatically deleted??? If yes, why would Gossamer want to charge me for that function if it already exists??

Thanks

in the admin area under "undeliverables", the only one i've got ticked is "bounce" for this setting...

If the user has more than the maximum number of messages.

Everything else is unticked.

give that a go! Smile

most likely they were thinking of implementing something else - a different way of dealing with it or a new function or something.

Hi,

For the unticked cases the mail that means would stay in the Catch All Account?

I am not clear on this.

Or probably they feel that the feature desired is not a standard feature that should be there and shall only be taken as a Custom Project just because of a "Troubled User"

I don't want my POP box to grow!!! Can Gossamer please clarify how this option works? The ability for GM to handle SPAM should be very prioritized!!! I am surprised no one else has reacted on this subject. Maybe everyone else only uses GM for a small amount of users...

Hi,

SPAM Handling! Yes It should indeed be prioritized. But befoer that I think the whole prduct needs sanitization against the numerous bugs that are there. Right now its something like getting one thing right and you find there is something else which is not functioning.

I've seen so many posts by one user having problems with incoming.pl

Here I am having problems with Navigation. And the biggest problem is that I don't see a reply to this even after 10 days.

It would take me sometime to recoup from the shock of having taken a decision to go ahead with GM. Frankly speaking I had an offer from "....." who were giving the same features in same cost but with additional feature of integrated POP support. Three Weeks after installation and I do not have my problems sorted out. Support Ticket only gets me autoresponder messages and no follow ups.

What do i say? Is there a Priority for GM?

if you leave the option "un"checked - ie. so it's not bouncing or being inserted - then it'll just be deleted.

i think that answers your question.

Re: [Surfer2] How do YOU handle SPAM? In reply to
Most installations only really need the bounce option turned on for all 4 options (IIRC it's 5 in 2.0.6 and lower). If you're curious to what mail is being bounced then you may want to enable insert (into the admin's account) for certain options. If your domain gets lots of spam attempts (like you're saying), then you don't want to turn on insert on "if the user does not authenticate". Gossamer Mail will still be bouncing those emails, which shouldn't be a problem but if it does, then you can even disable the bounce option for it too.

That's from the bounce that Gossamer Mail sent to the fake hotmail address? What version of Gossamer Mail are you using? In 2.1, we fixed some headers on bounced emails. Can you send me the email which bounces so I can take a look at the headers?

Yes, Gossamer Mail's incoming.pl won't leave any mail in the catchall unless you tell it to, or the mail server screws up Smile.

one thing i found with any of the bounce options turned on and using sendmail, is that any messages that return the bounce all end up in the servers root mailbox - not a fun thing to deal with.

Could you send me the bounced email (if it has the headers in it)?

Thanks for your reply! I will turn on the bounced messages so that I can give you a sample e-mail with headers. I think my server does use Sendmail and yes I do get the e-mails through my root account (very annoying, the root to my problem!)!

Thanks

Below is an example of e-mails I receive through my root address when I enable bouncing!!! xxx.com is my domain!
I want to highlight that I think its very important that the bounce feature works properly as a user must now if they have sent to the wrong address.
I also noticed in the e-mail below the "X-Gloop: Gossamer Mail". This has already been discussed on the forum, but I am hoping it will dissapear in the next version of GM.

thanks
