hosting for Links SQL

hosting for Links SQL
Hey guys,

Although I would love to get a dedicated server through GossamerHost, but as a college student, $300 extra a month is very hard to come by. I'm sure some of you can relate. Hopefully when I get my site rolling I'll be bringing in enough to make that switch to GossamerHost.

I was looking at these options (I assume their Managed servers have the same software packages installed as their Root servers):
http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/ServerRoot
http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/ServerManaged

The same company just ended a promotion in the US for 3 free years on their virtual hosting. Of course I got an account and have been playing with it. The server that my space on has a lot of other people on it as well, free customers is my guess. In spite of that, my sites on my free account show remarkable speed, which I assume can only get better with one of their dedicated servers.

What do you guys think of the options that they offer on those servers, if you don't mind. Should they be sufficient to run Links SQL, and potentially Gossamer Forum and mail in the future?

Thanks again!

Robert

Hi Robert,

I haven't used 1and1 myself, so can't really say anything about their servers. I assume your best bet would be to call their support/sales department and ask them if they would allow you to these things.

I myself having been using Burst/Nocster (www.nocster.com) for almost 3 years now, and my experience with them has been really great. Their rates are even better than 1and1 and they also have good support. Also, on my server I am running Links SQL without any problem, so I don't think you would be having any problem either.

I would still like to add this, from what I have heard about GT.. their servers are really great and GT staff knows that they are doing, so their support especially for thier own products would be next to none.

Hope this helps.

Hi Robert,

Those plans on the GossamerHost pages are outdated unfortunately, we're in the process of revamping them.

The new Plan A is a single processor AMD 2 gig CPU with 512 megs of RAM and an 80 gig hard drive for US$250 a month.

The main advantage hosting with us is that you get mod_perl installed and configured properly on the machine by default. Check out our hosting forum for some comments from a few of our clients:
http://gossamer-threads.com/.../gforum.cgi?forum=43;

The price is not as low as some other hosting companies are advertising, but with us you get a fully managed server where we handle all of the security updates and patches and a platform designed to run our programs like Links SQL, Gossamer Forum and Gossamer Mail optimally.

Let me know if you have any questions at all about hosting with us.

Jack.

Agreed. GHost has been the best that I have used in the last few years. The SPAM filtering is one of my favorite features, and also the backup facility :)

If you have the money.. got for it ... you won't regret it :)

I completely understand what you guys are saying, truly. I would LOVE to go with Gossamer Hosting, it's not a financially feasible option at this point, even at $250. In the near future, say a half year into my new site, then definitely, I should be making that amount easily.

But until then, does anyone have anythoughts on the specs of those servers I mentioned above? Can they get me by until I'm ready for Gossamer Host?

Thanks!Cool

If you can't afford Gossamer, then I would recommend staying as far away from NT servers as possible. From my experience, they are nothing but trouble :(

Afraid I don't have any recommendations for hosts though, as I havn't looked around recently :)

You really do not want to host on a non-'nix server.

There is no way that a windows machine can give the same performance for the same hardware costs, because windows is such a pig. The performance dies further if you try to virtually host on a windows machine, due to how windows allocates (and refuses to give up) resources.

If you look at the side-by-side "even" comparasons of windows vs unix, or MS vs Apache, you'll see in the fine print that the windows machine was tuned up by *THE* experts for maximum performance, and that the unix/apache was usually used right out of the box, or with extremely minimal tuning. In otherwords, typical M$ double-speak about "fair".

There are things you can do on unix servers that you can't do on windows. Pretty much anything you can do on windows, you can do with unix, cheaper, better, faster, and without paying M$ and locking yourself into a non-open platform.

Upgrades to Unix are released as they are developed, while M$ makes you wait -- even for bug fixes -- and then often charges you. It forces people to use older, less secure (is that redundant??) versions.

Also, virtually every virus out there attacks the _WINDOWS_ server, or client, *not* the Unix parts.

Virtually all hack attempts are targeted at windows (or Netware) vulnerabilities *NOT* Unix/Linux. If you look at your logs, you'll see all the requests and hits for windows vulnerabilities.

but, 'nuff said :)

I completely agree, I've never used a virtual host that uses Windows. Never cared for them. But the links I put above aren't for a Windows host?Crazy

Here it is again:
http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/ServerRoot

I believe the Root Server modules and systems are included in their Managed Server package as well.

Any thoughts if the software and packages in the above link can handle Links SQL? That was my original question, sorry if it was confusing how I phrased everything. I really just need someone to glance at those specs in the Root Server package above and let me know your thoughts on it.

The raw statistics will run a moderate Links SQL site.

But there is *more* to hosting than the specifications of the hardware. Those of us who have been around, know this all too well.

Ok, that's what I needed to know! This is only a temporary measure. Probably six months from now you'll hear from me as a pleased Gossamer Host customer!

Just a point - find out where the server actually is. I seem to remember that 1&1 is a German company and their servers may be in Germany (though I could be mistaken). May not matter to you if you're aiming at Europe but probably not a good idea if you're aiming at the US.

Hi,

You might want to look at a shared plan from us as well. With our mod_perl setup, it will be considerably faster then what you've posted.

Cheers,

Hi,

not sure how much you have shopped around but for shared hosting I have found HostEurope to be quite good + in my timezone.

I heard some negative things about them but to date (18 months) I have been very pleased and haven't had any brick walls... but then I suppose compared to my previous hoster that wasn't too hard cause they were abysmal.

They are pretty assured on their security features and they offer a business package which is 5000MB space, 20GB transfer per month, unlimited POPs + it seems to run my Links SQL no probs, all for 199 a year which is pretty good.

Support is good too. It's all a personal choice but if you haven't got much money to start with I think they are quite reasonable.

For dedicated I think GHost is your best bet though.

Kevin
