Experiences with Pair Networks?

Experiences with Pair Networks?
We are planning a very modest directory with detailed
reviews -- it's unlikely ever to exceed 1000 links.
Even with long reviews, we don't think it will exceed 3 Mb.

So we definitely don't need a dedicated server!
We are looking at our options for running Links SQL
on a virtual server.

Pair Networks http://www.pair.com/ looks good to us,
seems reliable, etc -- but they don't seem to have
mod_perl

Has anyone here got Links SQL at Pair Networks?
Are they OK?

Can anyone recommend a better host -- from experience?

Hello,

If you send an email to me paul@audio-grabber.com then I may be able to help you.

All our virtual sites run under mod_perl and you have access to MySQL, speedycgi, asp, php4 and cgi/perl

Paul Wilson. Shocked
(Dont blame me if I'm wrong!)

Are you sure about this? Do they run under separate httpd's, because if not, then one persons site will conflict with another.

Cheers,

Alex

Uh-oh.....

They do now Smile!

So do I have to make a copy of httpd for each vhost?

Where do I put it?...lol

Just another point........

We have about 6 vhosts on the server now and there doesnt seem to be any problem.....

The RAQ comes with mod_perl as you found out so surely they would have thought of this?

Can I put this another way?

When looking for a virtual server host, there are many
factors which we need to think about. Support for mod_perl
is one of them, but we are not certain where to rank it in
our list of priorities.

Is mod_perl necessary or just desirable?

Our limited experience has included some disappointments,
and we are inclined to favor virtual server hosts with a
long and solid track record -- if we can.

Lack of mod_perl counts against Pair Networks -- but in
practice, how serious is this deficiency for a relatively
low-traffic Links SQL?

Mod_Perl is most definitely just a luxury for low traffic sites..it isn't required at all.

mod_perl is not required, and I have never seen it implemented on a virtual server, it almost always requires a dedicated server.

The RAQ uses mod_perl for auto-generating it's httpd.conf file. The perl cgi scripts running are not running under mod_perl, but rather regular CGI. You can test this by printing out the environment variable. If you are under mod_perl it will say GATEWAY_INTERFACE => CGI-Perl rather then CGI-1.1.

I thought you said it already had mod_perl installed the other day.

I think Ed wanted it installed so that perl/cgi scripts run under mod_perl rather than just mod_perl creating httpd.conf
