Using Picture/Graphic in Listing

Using Picture/Graphic in Listing
Hi.

I'd like to use this product I think but need to include a graphic in the listing. I'd imagine I can do it with and external HTML call if nothing else?

Also, can I "sort" people based on the date they were entered into the database. I want a first come, first serve type thing.

And can each directory/category have an "include" - in other words some listings show up in ALL categories?

I do something in the wedding industry. Know anyone using this in that space?

Thanks.

LinksSQL offers the ability to 'upload' images to your local server, OR you could even just add a new text field, where you enter the URL to the image. The first option is probably the better option, as your site won't rely on external images to load correctly.

>>>Also, can I "sort" people based on the date they were entered into the database. I want a first come, first serve type thing. <<<

Sure. You should just need to modify build_sort_category in Setup > Build Options

>>>And can each directory/category have an "include" - in other words some listings show up in ALL categories? <<<

Yeah, LinksSQL allows you to add a link to as many categories as you want (you could add it to all of them if you really wanted).

>>>I do something in the wedding industry. Know anyone using this in that space? <<<

AskWeddings use LinksSQL for parts of their site (as well as a lot of extensive custom programming);

Hope that answers some of your questions :)

Thanks for a prompt reply.

I notice that wedding directory is database driven. They're not using the static .html option? Why not? Any particular reason. 60% of my traffic right now is from search engines. I can't afford to lose that.

You can see I have "local" listings... and then include nationwide listings (after them). I have them pretty tweaked out for search engines. Type in Orlando wedding services at Google and I'm right up there (and have been for some time).

It looks like this product can do it all... I just can't lose that SEO piece.

Thanks again.

They are using dynamic mode, which basically means that the pages are compiled in real time.

You can build static pages with ease, or even use mod_rewrite to give a 'static feel' on your pages. We use this on our site;

LinksSQL is great for SEO related things. It supports Meta_Keywords, Meta_Description , Description, Title, and more... all of which can be tweaked to perfection for the best SE rankings. I'm not that amazing with that kinda stuff, but I know it can be done, as I have seen so many sites that use LinksSQL, with great Google rankings.

Hope that helps.

Cheers

Say I want to let some people have "free" links but put my paying links listed first (and they would get a graphic too). Can I do this easily?

Yeah, this is possible. It would need to be some custom work though, unless you don't mind processing the payments manually, and validating listings. Basically, you need a new field, say isFeatured, which has yes/no options. Then, you would edit the build_category_sort_order option in the setup, and it should then order the listings that are featured first, and then the normal links.

Just curious... if you know (which you obviously know this product inside/out)...

Where to you adjust individual page meta-tags? And if you have dozens of categories (cities) and then several sub-categories, and then more sub-categories... this is some work. Obviously.

But the benefits are wonderful :)

I'm not quite sure what you mean. In Database > Category > Add/Modify you can assign specific Meta keywords/descriptions, which are then reflected on the category pages. As I said, LinksSQL is designed pretty well around SEO. Its template parsing system also makes everyones jobs a lot easier :)

I need to shoot now.. its almost 7pm here.

As for images in the listings,

http://ultranerds.com in the product/services area has some cut animations attached.

I've also used the http://thumbshots.org idea, and expanded it to fill in all the missing shots on:

http://pugs.net
http://origami.net
http://bodyart.com
http://debtcure.com

That last site is "pure" thumbshots, no fill ins. But the script will cache "good" images for 60 days, and will check missing images once per day.

It also took about 20 minutes to set up. The images appear automatically, and get filled in by an image fetch/display script.
