everyone's thoughts
Hey everyone,

I bounce around here from time to time, amongst managing my sites and going to class. Here's the scoop: I've got plans for a feasible site concept, and I'm pretty sure Links SQL can help. That said, I was curious on what your thoughts of the interworkings would be, ie. how to use each feature to accomplish what I'm going after.

Basically, it will be a hub for college students to buy, sell, and trade their books. I am aware that other such services exist. But considering I attend the largest university in the US (Ohio State) and a bulk of the students don't know of services like this, that speaks for itself.

The students would use my site to contact each other to arrange transactions (I won't handle them), so they'll need to register to contact each other directly from forms on the site. Each registered user can post books for sale and books they want. I'd also like to build something in to notify students of when a book they want becomes available.

The site could possibly have a directory structure by country, state/province, and then college.

I'm interested in your thoughts.Wink

What you described was basically a classified ad site.
This is absolutely possible with Links SQL.

Several of us have classified ad site, based on Links SQL.

Is this something that can be easily done with Links SQL "as-is" or perhaps are there plugins available out there?

Most features are implemented by default.
You will need template customizations, globals, and if you want some extra features, some plugins, too. Depends on what you need.

As for expiration feature, the v2.2.0 version already has such (minimal) feature, but also exists an Expirator plugin.

I also have an Advanced Link Expirator plugin, which was not published, yet.

Plugin list is available here:

Sounds simply enough. I browsed the directory Gossamer Threads has of sites using Links SQL, are there any using it in a classifieds manner as I've described above, or am I asking for too much? Smile

There are several modifications already for links as a classifieds.

GT has one, and you can build one of your own using a combination of plugins.

This is mostly template work on your part. Since you are not handling transactions, you only need to provide a listing/delisting, a ratings (so people can pick out bad sellers), and some contact forms, since some people may not want their email public.

Developing a set of policies is more important, and outlining the rules, then implementing them in the form of cut off dates, registration requirements and such is going to be the biggest set of issues to deal with.
