An interesting article today on CommuniTech

Claiming their Web sites were consuming too much of its servers' resources or contained prohibited items, Kansas City, Mo.-based CommuniTech.Net told customers earlier this month it would delete their accounts within three days if they did not upgrade them. While the upgraded accounts start at $223 a month, many people were paying just $22.95 a month for their accounts prior to the notice.

"Due to the fact that your Web site is dramatically inflating our CPU usage (and is subsequently violating our Terms of Service), we are requesting that you move to a dedicated hosting environment," a CommuniTech sales representative said in an email to one customer. "If this solution doesn't suit your needs, I'll be happy to refund your remaining payments to you, but must insist that you move to a new hosting company. Your site will be cancelled unless you've committed to purchasing a dedicated server."

Interesting news, pugdog...I was looking at CommuniTech as a possible hosting company for one of my web projects, but due to the negative publicity and TOU, I have decided to not use them...and my current hosting company has fixed most if not all the problems I've experienced with them, so I will continue to use them.

Thanks for the article.

Regards,

Eliot

I thought with all the talk about various hosting services, and how some people have thought about (or had to leave) them.

I'm still working out some hosting plans with my ISP who has given uniterupted service for over a year now.

Good hosting is a difficult thing to find. The industry is still way too new, and things have not settled down yet. As it matures, there will be more of a yard stick to measure service/price/performance by. Like cars, everyone is looking for something different, but you will not be able to do the same thing with $55,000 luxury car you can do with a 3/4 ton Pick up.

Some interesting quotes there:

"Websites which primarily promote Pokémon, professional wrestling, photo archives, software distribution and gaming."
are not allowed. Yikes. I guess you get unlimited bandwidth until you use too much.

<G>.... sort of leaves the field wide open for all those web pages that were first upload in 1996 and have remained unchanged ever since ....

Hello,

Actually in their service agreement it does specifically disallow the Gossamer Threads links package saying that it consumes too much resources and overloads their email servers.

Along with pokemon, wrestling and gaming. Sigh.

The strange part is that they say it overloads the email server. Under normal conditions, Links hardly puts any strain on email.

What most likely happened is someone was using a Links 2.0 installation with a lot of entries and tried to do a mass mail to all of them. The program then tried to send out a couple thousand emails and the mail server didn't like that. They then banned the program.

Ah well, at least they haven't asked to advertise on the site for quite a while (they had asked me a while ago even while the program was banned -- very strange).

Cheers,

Alex
