About video blogs
Hi there,

We'd like to use LSQL to build a site similar to http://www.youtube.com, where people can upload their videos and share them online.
I want a website with static pages, for traffic reasons. I'm hesitating on buying a Links SQl or a Movable type solution, because I don't know if LSQL can handle something similar to 'tags', a tag cloud for example and other fun little things. (see youtube)

What do you think about it ? Do you think LSQL is the appropriate product to build this website ?
Thanks, Mimi

GLinks could probably be used to make a similar site, but it would require some, if not a lot, custom development.

Tags: I've create a simple tag cloud of my GLinks, see http://slashdemocracy.org/links/
But I use normal categories as tags, so it's not quite as "free form" as normal tags. You could however add special fields for tags, so that users can add their own tags. But making it "smart" would require further development.

Basically, I think you are comparing an off-the-shelf product to a custom-built site with venture capital. Don't expect everything in a box - but I'm sure Gossamer Threads would be happy to help developing a custom application.

Thanks for your reply,

I know a bit of venture capital would do me good, but for the moment we stand alone.
Did you do these mods with ease or was it difficult ?
What do you mean by 'smart' ?

Hi Mimi,

Links SQL, now called GLinks, is a good platform on which to build the site you're looking for.

Here's another example, this is one of the detailed pages: http://www.flashkit.com/...otat-Eli_Assa-10989/
Instead of movie files, this is a database of flash files.

And this is another example with Quicktime files: http://blueskyfootage.com/Categories/

The difficulty of the job depends on your personal level of knowledge, but if you ever run into problems, we're available for custom work or we could take a set of specifications from you and hand over a finished site, whichever works for you.

One advantage of using GLinks is that you have experienced users like Gotze who will be able to provide information, and support from GT through: http://www.gossamer-threads.com/support/

Let me know if you have any further questions at all.

Jack.

Hi jack,

Glinks appears to me less handy on RSS feeds and blog-inspired data sharing features than, say, movable type (see http://gotzespace.dk/)

About Glinks and the technicians here : none of them know perl, only php. I know a lot of things can be handled with templates, but they are a little afraid that I might choose glinks because they will have, one day or another, to decypher the perl scripts to do their mods.

I'm sure this is a pretty common situation.

If you have staff to work on the site, then it might be best to use what they are comfortable with.

GLinks is written entirely in perl, and although we do have a powerful plugin system, if your technicians only know PHP, they're not going to have a fun time of making modifications to functionality.

That said, we do offer complete customisation services to provide you with your vision, and we have had a lot of experience with RSS feeds, both export and import, data sharing is part of the GLinks feature set, but the format is quite different from a dedicated blogging script. GLinks is more powerful than a blog script though, so if you wish to make more use of it in the future, the learning curve doesn't have to start anew.

The decision is yours of course, if you have people you have to keep happy in your organisation, that's what you have to do, but with GLinks, you can run it without the input of anyone else in your organisation should you have this inclination.

Let me know if you have any further questions at all.

Jack.
