mySQL/Perl Calendar Script

mySQL/Perl Calendar Script
Not sure exactly where I should ask this question but seeing as I want to integrate this with a the LinksSQL users database...

Does anyone know of a good mySQL/Perl Calendar script?

Looking for something not to fancy that would allow users to post, edit delete and modify their events. I'm not looking for a Outlook type script - just a simple Calendar script like Matt Kruse's Calendar script or PerlCal that you see at cgi-resources.com...

I've been looking for the same thing, but haven't found any thing. They either are too much, and too much money, and I can't/won't buy before I use it, and really, for what I need, and I think you are looking for, it wouldn't be too hard to make one, using MK's script as the basis for the output.

That's a personal scheduler, it looks like it has potential.

What I've been looking for is something to post a monthly calender for an organization. Something that allows flexibility in entering the information, and provides a clean interface for viewing. The clean viewing interface has been the biggest problem.

Pugdog, try http://webcalendar.sourceforge.net. It's a PHP one , but has a list in the bottom of page on similar ones. Also it include a mod_perl one, but I didn't test it.Smile

Any new info or thoughts on calendar scripts? I did some looking on Hotscripts and Resource Index and nothing really jumped out at me.

How did WebCalendar work out?

Also a PHP/MySQL approach, but I don't see any reason PHP and Perl can't be combined for incorporating into Links SQL, as evidenced by the new PHP frontend being built for Links.

I'm not an impartial party to the above mentioned option, so I'll leave it up to you to form an opinion. ;)

I still haven't found any really good scripts. Each seem to have some good points, but lots of stuff that doesn't work right (meaning cleanly on the screen, or logically).

I looked for months for a script for a client, but in the end, I think I just hacked a few things in Matt Wright's script.

What are/were you looking for in terms of display and organization?

Yup - still nothing good out there. I'm using an older version of this script. They seem to have some good ideas, but no mySQL support. Nice features though.

Dan,

I looked over myCalendar and it looks like a nice script and the price is reasonable.

I am looking for a script for a community calendar. It would be shared between all the area webmasters, so there would be only one calendar to post/review events, instead of the multiple current empty calendars Wink

I am looking for a calendar that would allow at least 4 levels of users:
1.) Admin - create, edit and delete anything
2.) Super User - posts appear prior to validation
3.) User - calendars posts are validated before appearing
4.) Anon - all calendar posts are validated prior to apearing

The super user category is pretty important as that would be organizations like the radio station, chamber of commerce, newspaper, etc that would be posting on a regular basis. The approved to post pending validation would allow them to post immediately and allow the Admin to keep a check on what is being done.

I poked around your demo and admin, and didn't see these features. Not saying they aren't there, just that I didn't see them.

If Dan or someone else knows of a script that is mySQL and has this kind of users levels, please let me know.

That would be because they're not there. :) Not yet, at least. That will be in the next release, which is at least 50% complete. I had planned on admin/moderator/user levels, but maybe I can build some flexibility into the defining of group levels.

Anyway, anything that does not pertain to the potential integration of Links SQL and MyCalendar would be better discussed at my own support forum, which can be gotten to through the link above. I'd rather not push the limits of what is acceptable to discuss in GT's forums.

This is a new listing on HotScripts. It is perl, but not mySQL, it is apparently flatfile. It is WebCalendar available at:

http://www.ma.utexas.edu/webcalendar/

It is highly configurable and has some nice added features. It contains two scripts, one to run the calendar system that runs in the cgi-bin and one that runs as a daemon that sends out reminders, so that would be a problem on accounts without root access.

It has some nice features and is worth a look.

That looks to have a lot of strong points, but it reminds me of Pugdog's earlier comments that many calendars try to be a personal scheduler, which strikes me as a very strange approach for a web based application. Maybe it will make more sense if Microsoft is successful in convincing us that we should use all our Office programs online... ;)
