Weights & Logic
Some questions about searching and the logic...

1: It's stated that a Higher number for weights give prominence to search results. In the world of math, a 1 can be Higher that a 4 or visa-a-versa so which is it?

2: Say you have 3 fields set to weights 1,2,3 would another field set at 9 be any different than setting that to a 4? Again the flow of logic dictates...

3: The manual states a re-index of the search tables is only required IF data is changed outside the program. Would not a re-index be required after weights are changed IN the program?

Thank you.

Hi,

1. A 4 would be more important then a 1.

2. Yes, the way it works is a Links SQL looks at where the match was found. If you searched for the word 'Car', and it appeared in the Title which had a weighting of 4, and twice in the Description which had a weighting of 1, the "score" for this link is 4 + 2 * 1 = 6. If you had a keywords field with a weighting of 9, and the word car appeared in the keyword list, it would have a score of 9, and would return above the other link (which had more matches, but lower weighting).

3. Yes, that should be updated. A re-index is required if you change weights.

Cheers,

Alex

That's great,

I've always had some niggling doubts about the correct way it's supposed to work. So many thanks for the clarification!
