A ByLine is something that refers to who wrote the review. Sometimes, it refers to the originating organization -- such as API or CNN, but in most reviews or editorials it's the authors name.
The By Line may or may not be the same as the author. The By Line is the way the author wants to be credited for the review/story.
I have not looked at the Reviews module much, but a quick look at the database indicates that's what it's for.
