One of the things that Links SQL 2.0 needs to have, that links SQL 1.0+ had, is either a help file or something that lists all the <% ??? %> tags that can be used in the user templates.

For example... (and I figured these out, just using them as an example) what is <%db_cgi_url %>, is it just like <%build_root_url %>?!? What about <%site_title %> and <%title_linked %> , or <%category_clean %> and <%category %>?!?

Anyways, It would be nice to have a list of all the ones that come with Links SQL, and a short explination of each. Either as a link from the 'edit templates' page, or somewhere in the 'help' section.

Just my $.02 cents!! I'm sure there are others who would like this feature.

If I have some free time in the near future I will make a list of all the tags and their function.

.....but only for Links2. I'll leave Links SQL to someone else :)

I was personally talking about SQL, but knowing Gossamer, I bet they use the same ones in all the different versions (Links 1 + 2, Links SQL 1 + 2), it just makes sense to do it that way.

THANX!

wow. I am sot of amazed that this isn't currently available.

I just bought LinksSQL and am having a difficult time developing it. The help files are so....thin. This seems like a MUST for the admin area.

Hey Gossamer guys: can you give us a list of what each function does? please?

I was actually pretty impressed with the depth of the help files... At least, for those areas *covered* by the help files. Any given item of interest seems to be either very well-explained, or simply not included. But you're right, a list of functions & descriptions/definitions/instructions would help out *immensely*... especially for those of us just getting started.

Yeah, by thin I meant that it doesn't seem to cover everything. :)

Hopefully the next version will have this built in.

For as good as this forum can be at times, finding information is often still the proverbial Needle in the Haystack. Of all things that this product lacks, proper documentation is the greatest of them all. That said, even though I believe GT should already provide complete documentation, if Pugdog were to write a "Definative guide" type of book for NG, I would be first in line to buy it.

Food for thought there, Pugsie.

Funny you should say that...

I've thought about it, but the first step is still collecting all the tidbits, and updating the FAQ. Once the last big bug fix is out, I've thought about approaching Alex for a Book/Software deal, with the "updates" in the forum. At any rate, such a project has a long lead time, too long to really be of help to anyone currently in a jam.

Whether it would ever happen of course would depend on publisher interest.

Also, the key features of Links have to be "set" before it could be come a reality to put anything in unalterable print.

Hi,

This is a recognized shortfall. While we are quite strong technically here, we could use some help in other areas.

That said, we have a technical writer coming on board next week who is going to be spending the next two months creating much better manuals for most of our products.

Cheers,

Alex

cool. My preference would be a gossamer written manual, rather than having to purchase another product to learn how to run the one product we bought :)

Thanks Alex.

Outstanding! I believe you will find the manpower needed to create the documentation for your products will become an investment that far outweighs your present customer support manpower burden for lack of said documentation. If it's even half as good as the product itself, it will be a God-send.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for addressing this need.

I totally agree with that, I would think the lack of documentation would discourage most "newbies" from venturing with the product. Think of this forum acting like a Microsoft knowledge base, most questions are answered somewhere down the line, but many newcomers being overwhelmed by the amount of posts here, would soon rather ask an already answered question over searching the forum.

So more detailed documentation would certainly help ease the forum and also help new and experienced users deal with the complexities of the software(s) in question.

All in all, a great announcement by GT :-)

Thanx Alex.. that sounds like wonderful news!!

I finally figured 'em all out and got the new version of Links SQL up and running the way I had Links SQL 1.x running (just missing one more thing, that's support for an exipration date for the links that need 'em).

Anyway, THANKS AGAIN!!

PS- The other thing I would like (but don't need) is user intergration with ikonboard (I know it exists for UBB and WWW Threads, shouldn't be too hard to figure out for ikonboard). If anyone is working on this (or has it done already) please let me know!!
