I read something brief about placing a 1 or a 2 in the weight field to make a field searchable. What's the difference between putting a 1 or a 2 or a 10 in thesearch weight? Am I right to assume that if a record has a field that has a 10 for search weight, and someone searches and a keyword they searchby is found in records 1, 2, and 3, and records 1 and 2 have a search weight of 2 and record 3 has a search weight of 10, then 10 will show up first in the search results, would this be correct?

Not sure without checking, but I think so. It also depends on what type of "indexing" you are using. Can't remember from the top of my head which types use the "weight" system though (I'm sure its in the manual PDF file somewhere)
Hope that helps.
