Is there a way to set a certain design element and have it cascade to the sub-categories below it?

For instance: Hawaii: Maui: Arts

The overall site design would apply to "Hawaii", and I want to change the design of the "Maui" category and have that design cascade down through "Arts" and all of the other sub-categories below "Arts".

Can this be done in one place and affect dozens of sub-categories and sub-sub-categories?

Have you tried using the category template field in the category table. As far as I can remember this will also affect all subcategories.
