Can you read this for me?

Can you read this for me?

I have two Links SQL running on two small machines. I am considering about a bigger machine to put them togather. I want a dedicated server based on the following statement on the company's web. But someone in my workplace told me that the following statment only applies to outsourcing people. I understand it differently. I think that it applies to all of us running Links SQL. What do you think?

"Optional: Links SQL will work under mod_perl for the best performance. However, this usually requires a dedicated server, and some co-operation from your hosting company. It's not trivial to install or set up. We can offer dedicated servers with mod_perl setup and configured. See our hosting options for more information."

Thanks.

Basically, it means that GT offers dedicated servers with mod_perl installed that you can use to host your LINKS SQL directory.

I think that it means that Links SQL has better performance under mod_perl and a dedicated server. It should be true with any one including the host company and people running their own Links SQL. Or is it (the above statement) true only with the hosting company, not us?

That is true...LINKS SQL will have better performance with mod_perl, but it depends on your hosting package...and your hardware/software...mod_perl best runs in a dedicated server, NOT a virtual account.

Hi,

Sorry about the confusion. It means that Links SQL will run best under mod_perl. You still see improvements whether it is on your own server, or on our hosted ones. In practice, most ISP's do not allow mod_perl on virtual/shared servers.

Cheers,

Alex

Thanks for all your responses. They clear things up. Now I know for sure. Do you have written instructions on your web for upgrade or installation procedures?

Upgrade instructions come with the LINKS SQL downloadable tar.gz file, I believe...

Alex and Eliot Lee:

I have two copies of Links SQL now. I am debating if I should move them to a new dedicated server or combine them with other applications. Please forgive me for my ignorance. What do you mean by virtual/shared servers? Can I run three Links on the same machine with another application running (This application comes with Apache server and starts Apache automatically)? That means that I have to run second Apache to go with three copies of Links SQL. Do you consider this to be a virtual/shared server? Do you have a guideline for RAM usage?

A shared server is a server you SHARE with others like when you sign up for webhosting.

Dedicated servers are servers DEDICATED to you and your sites. ie you don't share them with anyone else.

You should be fine running 2-3 copies of Links SQL on the same DEDICATED server depending on site popularity. If you get tons of hits then that may be a different matter as you would either need to buy a second or third server or buy tons of RAM

Based on your definition, a dedicated server is for my site only even if it runs ten different applications other than Links SQL. The difference between shared vs. dedicated lies in how many different applications they run ? or for whom they run applications? Which way is it correct?

Both are correct - a dedicated server is run by you for you.

BTW: LIKE I have mentioned to on a number of occassions in this forum already, this has been discussed quite a bit in the support forums...Have you even tried to search the support forums for dedicated server???????

This is like the third time you are asking the SAME questions. Guess you DFGI.

I don't think that you can run two copies of lsql under mod_perl on the same apache server at the mo.

Alex,

I'm planning on purchasing a second license very soon and will be hosting on the same server. Will both copies be able to use mod Perl or would problems arise using it this way?

Hi,

With 2.0.4 there would be problems, however we recently fixed this in Gossmaer Mail 2, and will fix Links SQL as well shortly (I can email you a new Links::Config if you need it sooner, it's a simple change).

Cheers,
Alex

Not sure how you'd change it, but it would be useful if you could.

This is my conlusion: Links SQL will run in multiple copies and with other applications in a shared environement. However it has the best performance under mod_perl and on a dedicated server. It took a day for me to figure out this even though it seems simple to most people.
