While writing a custom plugin at one time had some attraction, and it might still for sites that have been modified, going through community is probably the better, most upgradeable means now.

Community was designed to be flexible, and to share data with various modules. (Links, Gmail, Forum, etc). One profile can be maintained, and available.

if you need "private" profiles, writing a plugin to maintain a Profiles table for each application that wants a private profile might be an option, but that's a special case, not a "general" one.

It's also a fairly simple thing to do. Just a script that seens if a user is logged in, maintains a table giving a logged-in user access to their profile record. You can then use standard globals to access the data. One advantage of this is that it does _not_ mess with the log-on data, and can be used to give people "private" data unlinked from their username in other areas. (such as an adult chat board vs the links area or mail).
