IDEA

Something else which spings to mind:

This would solve the issue raiser earlier in this thread about sites with a large number of clicks using up server reasorces, as well as scripts which spam your counter... read on:
  • Introduction of a "max hits per hour script". This would cap the number of "IN" increments for any site in any one hour. I thought of max hits per minute, but essentialy you can do the same things by just multiplying the setting by 60.
  • This would be a global setting which would affect ALL links using the counter or image. Note, that number of page impressions would not be affected by this capping, so that the counter remain accurate.

Comments?

Hi,

Yes it can. Wink I'll put it into the next version. <<DONE

Thanks

I have added:
  • Reset All Counts
  • Reset All IN's

I have decided no to add:
  • Reset All Hits - this is a standard Links column, and I dont really see why anyone would want this.

Both of these have been added to the TOOLS menu.

ANOTHER IDEA

Not that you may really care where you a user directs traffic to your site FROM, but to ensure they are not placing tags ANYWHERE, I am considereing additional security over and aboe the 10 digit security code, to include Referrer checking agains the URL in you database.

Example: The counter is on a site www.xyz.com. If this matches the url in your database when an IN click is received, it will increment the IN counter. If there is no match, the jump will still occurr, but no IN will be recorded!

I am just wondering how many honest sites this would not work for if $ENV{'HTTP_REFERER'} did not pick up their address properly?

Just another idea, comments welcome.

Hi

I do not think this is a good idea..

We all know that some sites have more than one domain, off site services.. beside the REFERER tag problem that we all have i think..

VERSION 2.0.3 RELEASED In reply to

VERSION 2.0.3 RELEASED

  1. I have added: Reset All Counts , Reset All IN's to the Tools Menu
  2. I have added "Total Links Being Tracked" to the statistics. This is based on all links which have an IN value greater then 0.
  3. Updated to the demo counter template included with the plug-in.
  4. Corrected table settings so certain columns are not required, thus allowing additions without errors.

- Available in private download area only -

GRAPHIC COUNTER DESIGN

I am offering an add-on design service with this plug-in ($10) if you don't have the time to or abilities to create a GRAPHIC counter. For this fee, I would create a graphic counter for you which looks the same as mine (your site name and colors of course). This graphic counter is designed to work only with RC, and the IFRAMES method. This service is seperate to the RC counter fees and support. You can see a live version of this counter by visiting any of the sites in my top lists.

Hi Ian,

Can you give me a brief rundown of these functions please:

Force all links to show Counter

Force all links to show Image

Thanks!

Hi, sure!

Force all links to show Counter

This tool sets all of your links to show the counter as the default, regardless of their current settings. It does this by going through every single link in your table and changing all RC_Display to 'Counter'

Force all links to show Image

This tool sets all of your links to show the image as the default, regardless of their current settings.

RC allows you to show either a graphic (you specify the location in the settings), or a counter, where you can modify the template to show virtually anything you like.

These functions are designed to save those people time, who like too have all links set to one or the other, and not a mixture of both. Use these functions with caution. Accidently clicking the wrong one, once your top lists are up and running, would give your users a suprise! Though, not disatersous, you can easily change them back to the correct setting.

Ah, so a choice has to be made of either the graphoc or the counter then (as I understand it).

So if I wanted to create a graphic that stated "Review This Site" and point the RC to the detail page I would need to select the "graphic" option.

The result is that if a website wants to be on the TopX list they have to have the graphic on their site for it to create the desired results for them and for us.

I think I have it!

Thanks!

Actually,

You can use a combination of graphics, or counters. But not both for the one site (unless they have more than one link in the directory). However, you can make the counter be the same as a graphic if you wish... the counter option is very flexible due to its template based nature.

>>So if I wanted to create a graphic that stated "Review This Site" and point the RC to the detail page I would need to select the "graphic" option.

Either would work. It depends on what you want your other sites to have on them. Assuming all of your sites will have basically two choices 1. graphic 2. counter... I would customize the counter to show counter only stuff. The graphic one might be better for non-counter information.

>>The result is that if a website wants to be on the TopX list they have to have the graphic on their site for it to create the desired results for them and for us.

Yes, either the graphic or counter created by RC will increment their data in the top lists. Maybe give them the choiceWink

SUGGESTION/IDEA

Another possible use for Remote Count, is to keep track of your own categories! You could place a counter on the bottom of each of your category pages, and generate most popular category lists! To do this you would have to create a link in your directory for each of your categories (not something you want to do for a large directory unless you are handy with writting scripts!). These bogus links would simply be used to track each category... you would make the link title the same as the category you are tracking. Just an idea! (it might need a little plug-in modification to do this of course)

TRENDS IN RC In reply to

UPDATE

I have this working in my site, and I am toying with the idea of putting it into a future version of RC.

Trend Analysis for Top Links Lists

What it does is analyses the trend in rank position (the position in the lists). This is more useful than trends on the actual data, as in this type of list the data is either stationary or upward (never downward). This rank trend meter also makes rank position changes really stand out: the owner of the link moving up sees a nice UP next to their link, and the owner who was 'bumped' by this link, sees a not so nice 'DN' next to theirs. This creates even more competition between link owners in your top lists! Pretty cool eh?

Re: [Teambldr] TRENDS IN RC In reply to
Hi Katabd and Brian,

Thanks for the comments and ideas. This is still in the trial stage on my site. It will only be supported for static directories when I do inlclude it (for now at least). The reason for this is the additional code which would be required to make the dynamic setup useable is not that simple. The trend information would work on a dynamic setup, but the sites showing up or down would show no movement with the next user viewing the top list. This means the life of a trend movement is one user.

With a static directory, the life of the displayed trend information, is the time between directory builds, which is much more suitable.

As I say, I am sure there is a way, but at this stage I am just trialing the whole concept as I wanted this on my own site. All going well, I will add it to RC for optional use if it is usable to you in its current form.

Perhaps your ideas (what are great ones) Brian, will come about more when I look at the dynamic directory support for this function.

Cool

Hi Ian

Since you are into changing things in RC..

How about making the way the Top X links look customizable through a templete RC_link.html..

So we can add custom fields and change the way they look if needed..!

Hi,

What do you mean by change the links? Is this something you can't already do in the top list template rc_rank.html?

EDIT: You can use the <%ID%> tag for each link ID, create an additional column in your table, and place what ever information you like based on this, just as you would with a normal link in your links directory i.e. an image, a link to a detailed page etc. This requires no changes to RC and you could do right now I expect. Depends what you mean.

Hi

I do know that, but what I mean is different..

In my link.html I use if statements to direct users to different pages (detailed, actual URL, Article based page and so..)

and i want a way so the Top X will have the same forwarding control...

Basically ability of the Top X link format to accept if statements..

I checked my stats, and I notice my rc_handle.cgi file (from RC) is becoming an increasing contributor to the overall traffic on my site. While it is still a small amount percentage wise, it still is bring people into the site, and I am sure it would be a great way to increase traffic on anyones site. Thes top list type of things seem to be popular for return visitors.

Here is the troubling section:

<font face="arial" size="2">
<%if articles%><a href="<%db_cgi_url%>/detail_page.cgi?ID=<%ID%>"><%Title%></a>
<img border="0" src="<%_url%>images/save/article.gif" alt="Article Hosted On 2muslims.com">
<%else%>
<%if on_site%><a href="<%db_cgi_url%>/detail_page.cgi?ID=<%ID%>"><%Title%></a>
<img border="0" src="<%_url%>images/save/article.gif" alt="Article Hosted On 2muslims.com">
<%else%>
<a href="<%db_cgi_url%>/safe_jump.cgi?ID=<%ID%>"><%Title%></a>
<%endif%>
<%endif%>
</font>

Both Articles things do not have a URL assigned they are just stories or artciles..

And they are popular so they are becoming on the top list but returning dead links..!

Hi Ian

If you remember the suggestion on your forum about the improvements to RC..

I believe such a major upgrade to bring the whole RC plug in to a new level..

As far as the traffic goes.. My top sites service (not RC) beings about 18,000 hits a month to my site..

Have you tried this in the rc_rank template just out of curiosity? I am not saying it will work but it might.

The ID tag is available to you, and I can't see why the if statments wouln't be either, as the template is parsed by the GT HTML module anyways.

As for your other post: Its all a question of time katabd... I dont have a lot of it, as I am supporting a few plugins and quite of few users now... which leaves me less time. I will look at every suggestion eventually, and see what it involved for me to implement and if it is something everyone can use.

RC brought me over 5,000 hits yesterday alone. Unforuntaely you can't see this on the site, as I have to play around with the data for testing purposes :-(.
