ODP Plugin?
Wasn't or is there a plugin that will pull information from the open directory project into the Links sql database? I thought I used to have it, but have reformatted my hard drives many times since back then. Is it still available somewhere, I would like to pull a couple of catagories from the odp.

Thanks

You can import links from DMOZ (ODP) into Links SQL using the import script. You probably need shell access to do this.

Search this forum for dmoz import.

Not trying to plug my site...but I do offer sliced files from the content.rdf.u8 files (see here)...just makes it a bit nicer on the server, as it means you don't need to go through the whole file, to get to the categories you want Smile

If you don't have shell access, the software the teambld has suggested is very good (a little tricky to start with) but once you get the hang of it is very good - I use it myself.

I am sure one of us could help you a little in its use. I don't own shares in the software BTWWink. I just think its good.

Yeah...it is indeed a very good little program. I did beta testing for the newest version...very thorough tool...altouh not very good if you want to import thousands and thousands of categories/links Wink

I did 50,000 in one go, but I think that was the top. Better to do smaller chucks... like breaking the top categories you are importing into individual imports.

I purchased that software, dmozextract, but Im running Links sql 2.1.1 and I think the converter is only for links nonsql.

Ive crawled dmoz for what I want, a total of 542 links, then used the converter for GT Links, and it produces the old style database of links 2.0

So now how do I get it into a format that my sql links will import?

Thanks ever so much for turning me onto that.

Or just do it the fast way, via nph-import.cgi ;)

Yes, but I am refering to those (like myself) who do not have shell access. Though I could set up a mock up on this machine and do it from here, that would actually be more work.

Here ya go. I am on 2.1.0 and use it.

1. Extract to DE

2. Open Access and selct the DE database

3. Highlight the links icon

4. Open by using the "Analyze using Excel" feature.

5. Configure the data to use with your upload program or import tool.

Note: In my case I have an upload links plugin that GT developed for me that allows direct importation of a tab/text file with the format of:

Category
Title URL Description
Site Title/Site URL/description of site (where / = tab)
Site Title/Site URL/description of site
Site Title/Site URL/description of site

etc...

Yeah...but you could do it on another server, dump the data, copy it to your server, and then execute the SQL query via MySQLMan....Tongue
