TOP X COUNT TAG EXAMPLE OUTPUT

EXTRACT FROM INBUILT DOCUMENTATION:

Top X Count

# This subroutine returns the toplist
# Called with <%Plugins::RemoteCount::TopXCount('TopX','Max Title Length', 'Sort Order')%>
# Order:
# iox - IN OUT EXP
# ixo - IN EXP OUT
# xoi - EXP OUT IN
# xio - EXP IN OUT
# oix - OUT IN EXP
# oxi - OUT EXP IN

Example: <%Plugins::RemoteCount::TopXCount('100','75', 'xio')%>

Returns the top 100, with titles capped at 75 chars, and order by Exposures, In's then Out's

Note: "Birds of a feather floc ..." This would be a setting of 23 for example... giving a total string length of 27 (4 for the space and three dots).

Lastly, you can adjust the rc_rank.html template so that the tag output displays exactly the way you want it.

WHAT IS REMOTE COUNTER?

Remote count is a clever little script which allows you to place a page counter, or a graphic of your choice onto a remote site, and maintain the count in your links database. It also directs anyone who clicks on the graphic or custom "Powered By....." text to either the detailed page of the link, or your home page - YOU DECIDE. No matter what, you bring more traffic to your site.

Example (Courtesy of Brian):

CORRECTIONS

I have recieved a suggestion (another good one!!) and I have also found a little bug which is now fixed:

  1. When you click on the counter on the remote site, the page is opening in the little frame. This can be fixed by adding the part in red to your rc_counter.html template:

    <p align="center"><a href="<%url%>" target="_blank"><%hits%></a><br><b>
    <font size="2" color="#000080">By Categories.ca</font></b></p>

    That will fix the counter... the fix for the image (which I just did) is in the code itself.
  2. Adding URL/Hyperlinking to the Titles in the TOP X Count list. <<DONE!!

I have just installed RC Count onto Categories.ca, and it seems to be working great now. It took me 20 minutes to install RC, modify my cool template, and rc templates. Not bad. It may take longer depending on how many mods you have to do in your own templates, but it was not a difficult install.

EDIT: The titles are hyperlinked so that the URL is not revealed on mouse over, and when clicked, the click is recorded - just like Links handles a displayed URL in your categories.

You can see a demo of the TopX tag and RC plugin at work (when I am not testing the plug-in) at:

http://www.categories.ca/Cool/

You will see that I have actually replaced the built in what's cool that links generates with the top X tag from RC. This is because RC produces more than just a hit top list.

I notice you are using <IFRAME> tags for the counter.

Is this tag compulsory or can <IMG> tags be used as an alternative? The reason I ask is that whilst <IFRAME> works well with the latest browsers, some browsers do have some problems properly displaying their contents.

Thanks,

Hi Clint,

I am sure this might be possible - I have not tried it yet. But any method which make the page active and easily able to load the cgi should work.

This does not involve any code changes for the counter, you could play around with the included template file for displaying the counter and see what works. I too will have a look at this.

Thanks!

SUGGESTIONS

On another note: Since going to bed last night - and I am writing this just on my way to breakfast, I have received another load of great suggestions. Some are more difficult than others, so I will put these on hold till I know how to do them (and have some time).

One I am going to look at fairly soon is:

  • The ability to turn off the remote counting function for busy sites. As you can imaging, if a site is getting a thousand plus hits an hour, things are going to start adding up on your server resources! (thanks for this suggestion). The problem I see with this, is you can't stop someone visiting your site normally, so you can't stop them placing your counter onto their site (even if it is not functional). You could just change the rc_code for the associated link in your links table (easily done), and this would stop the counter working all together. What could be programmed in, is that you have the ability to simply stop the cgi from incrementing the hits, even wall a call is made to it to do so. But I still don't see the need to program this, as you can still do this by changing the code, so the site owner does not know what it is. Anyways, I need some input on this before going any further with this idea.

Just to recap: Each link is given a code by RC you can assign. By default, all codes are 0 initially, allowing anyone to place the code onto their site, as long as they know their link number and the method for which to call the file. Simple enough. For increased secuirty, you can place up to a 10 digit code with each link, which will stop code/link# mismatches from doing anything. This is already built into RC.

Nice work Ian.

I have an idea for it as well. What if there were a topx per category?

Secondly, what if the results page could be syndicated allowing another website to show the top 10 links in X category with just a simple copy n paste code? This of course would only need the rank and title. I,O,X would not be needed to be shown on a remote site.

Hi Brian,

Great suggestions!

One thing that springs to mind, is server resources though. I think super computer required if you have a lot of busy sites running the these functions on your site. I guess this depends on the number of likley people using this, and the power of your setup.

Food for thought for sure.

If you want to make your counter have a transparent background (so that users can keep there site's nice look) use the following: (I do this on categories)

I am thinking it would be nice to be able to send the user directly to your Top List page when they click on the counter or graphic.

I will consider adding the option for you to be able to specify where the user is re-directed... there may be some problems with this, as every-ones site is different, but I will look into it for a future version anyways.

I think that directing the other sites traffic to their detail page on your site is the most interactive unles the site is not running detailed pages. Then it moght be best to take them to the review or rate section for the link on your site.

Yeah... I am one of those people who don't use detailed pages, hence the idea.

Currently RC will send them to either the detailed page, or the your home page... there is an option in the settings.

The what's cool page is where most would stick this list I would imagine, so I could easily add this as a third option in the settings.

EDIT: the rate or review section is also a good idea.

The reason I suggested those two sections is due to the interactivity. But maybe the right answer is to make it configurable to the site owners needs by offering an open slot for the third. So Detail Page, Home Page and then Open Slot.

I am thinking about a javascript version of the counter (my javascript skills are not that great), but this is an example of how another counter company uses javascript to display a remote counter:

Code:
<SCRIPT TYPE="text/javascript" LANGUAGE="javascript">
s="na";c="na";j="na";f=""+escape(document.referrer)
</SCRIPT>
<SCRIPT TYPE="text/javascript" LANGUAGE="javascript1.2">
s=screen.width;v=navigator.appName
if (v != "Netscape") {c=screen.colorDepth}
else {c=screen.pixelDepth}
j=navigator.javaEnabled()
</SCRIPT>
<SCRIPT TYPE="text/javascript" LANGUAGE="javascript">
function pr(n) {document.write(n,"\n");}
NS2Ch=0
if (navigator.appName == "Netscape" &&
navigator.appVersion.charAt(0) == "2") {NS2Ch=1}
if (NS2Ch == 0) {
r="&size="+s+"&colors="+c+"&referer="+f+"&java="+j+""
pr("<A HREF=\"http://www.TheCounter.com\[/url]" TARGET=\"_top\"><IMG"+
" BORDER=0 SRC=\"http://c3.thecounter.com/id=2423218"+r+"\"><\/A>")}
</SCRIPT>
<NOSCRIPT><A HREF="http://www.TheCounter.com" TARGET="_top"><IMG
SRC="http://c3.thecounter.com/id=1234567" ALT="TC" BORDER=0></A>
</NOSCRIPT>
Any suggestion on how to incorporate this with RC would be appreciated. I will be looking into this myself also.

Ok, the actual diversion URL is not in yet, but for 2.0.3 you will have these options for where to send users who click on your remote counters (or images):
  • Home (default)
  • Detailed page for the link
  • Whats Cool Page (this is where I keep my Top X List)
  • Top Rated

A Note on Transparancy with In Line Frames

In line frames are supported from IE 4 or so, but if you wish to use the transparent background, users with IE5.5 or newer will be the only ones to be seeing this. I have made my default background white, which is probably the more common background color used on website. This means users whose browsers do not support transparent backgrounds, will see a white background. Please feel free to read the reference at: http://msdn.microsoft.com/...nefloatingframes.asp

Something else which spings to mind:

This would solve the issue raiser earlier in this thread about sites with a large number of clicks using up server reasorces, as well as scripts which spam your counter... read on:
  • Introduction of a "max hits per hour script". This would cap the number of "IN" increments for any site in any one hour. I thought of max hits per minute, but essentialy you can do the same things by just multiplying the setting by 60.
  • This would be a global setting which would affect ALL links using the counter or image. Note, that number of page impressions would not be affected by this capping, so that the counter remain accurate.

ANOTHER IDEA

Not that you may really care where you a user directs traffic to your site FROM, but to ensure they are not placing tags ANYWHERE, I am considereing additional security over and aboe the 10 digit security code, to include Referrer checking agains the URL in you database.

Example: The counter is on a site www.xyz.com. If this matches the url in your database when an IN click is received, it will increment the IN counter. If there is no match, the jump will still occurr, but no IN will be recorded!

I am just wondering how many honest sites this would not work for if $ENV{'HTTP_REFERER'} did not pick up their address properly?

Just another idea, comments welcome.

GRAPHIC COUNTER DESIGN

I am offering an add-on design service with this plug-in ($10) if you don't have the time to or abilities to create a GRAPHIC counter. For this fee, I would create a graphic counter for you which looks the same as mine (your site name and colors of course). This graphic counter is designed to work only with RC, and the IFRAMES method. This service is seperate to the RC counter fees and support. You can see a live version of this counter by visiting any of the sites in my top lists.

Hi, sure!

Force all links to show Counter

This tool sets all of your links to show the counter as the default, regardless of their current settings. It does this by going through every single link in your table and changing all RC_Display to 'Counter'

Force all links to show Image

This tool sets all of your links to show the image as the default, regardless of their current settings.

RC allows you to show either a graphic (you specify the location in the settings), or a counter, where you can modify the template to show virtually anything you like.

These functions are designed to save those people time, who like too have all links set to one or the other, and not a mixture of both. Use these functions with caution. Accidently clicking the wrong one, once your top lists are up and running, would give your users a suprise! Though, not disatersous, you can easily change them back to the correct setting.

Ah, so a choice has to be made of either the graphoc or the counter then (as I understand it).

So if I wanted to create a graphic that stated "Review This Site" and point the RC to the detail page I would need to select the "graphic" option.

The result is that if a website wants to be on the TopX list they have to have the graphic on their site for it to create the desired results for them and for us.

I think I have it!

Thanks!

Re: [Teambldr] VERSION 2.0.3 RELEASED In reply to
Actually,

You can use a combination of graphics, or counters. But not both for the one site (unless they have more than one link in the directory). However, you can make the counter be the same as a graphic if you wish... the counter option is very flexible due to its template based nature.

>>So if I wanted to create a graphic that stated "Review This Site" and point the RC to the detail page I would need to select the "graphic" option.

Either would work. It depends on what you want your other sites to have on them. Assuming all of your sites will have basically two choices 1. graphic 2. counter... I would customize the counter to show counter only stuff. The graphic one might be better for non-counter information.

>>The result is that if a website wants to be on the TopX list they have to have the graphic on their site for it to create the desired results for them and for us.

Yes, either the graphic or counter created by RC will increment their data in the top lists. Maybe give them the choiceWink

SUGGESTION/IDEA

Another possible use for Remote Count, is to keep track of your own categories! You could place a counter on the bottom of each of your category pages, and generate most popular category lists! To do this you would have to create a link in your directory for each of your categories (not something you want to do for a large directory unless you are handy with writting scripts!). These bogus links would simply be used to track each category... you would make the link title the same as the category you are tracking. Just an idea! (it might need a little plug-in modification to do this of course)

TRENDS IN RC In reply to

UPDATE

I have this working in my site, and I am toying with the idea of putting it into a future version of RC.

Trend Analysis for Top Links Lists

What it does is analyses the trend in rank position (the position in the lists). This is more useful than trends on the actual data, as in this type of list the data is either stationary or upward (never downward). This rank trend meter also makes rank position changes really stand out: the owner of the link moving up sees a nice UP next to their link, and the owner who was 'bumped' by this link, sees a not so nice 'DN' next to theirs. This creates even more competition between link owners in your top lists! Pretty cool eh?

Hi Katabd and Brian,

Thanks for the comments and ideas. This is still in the trial stage on my site. It will only be supported for static directories when I do inlclude it (for now at least). The reason for this is the additional code which would be required to make the dynamic setup useable is not that simple. The trend information would work on a dynamic setup, but the sites showing up or down would show no movement with the next user viewing the top list. This means the life of a trend movement is one user.

With a static directory, the life of the displayed trend information, is the time between directory builds, which is much more suitable.

As I say, I am sure there is a way, but at this stage I am just trialing the whole concept as I wanted this on my own site. All going well, I will add it to RC for optional use if it is usable to you in its current form.

Perhaps your ideas (what are great ones) Brian, will come about more when I look at the dynamic directory support for this function.

Cool

What do you mean by change the links? Is this something you can't already do in the top list template rc_rank.html?

EDIT: You can use the <%ID%> tag for each link ID, create an additional column in your table, and place what ever information you like based on this, just as you would with a normal link in your links directory i.e. an image, a link to a detailed page etc. This requires no changes to RC and you could do right now I expect. Depends what you mean.

And they are popular so they are becoming on the top list but returning dead links..!

Hi Ian

If you remember the suggestion on your forum about the improvements to RC..

I believe such a major upgrade to bring the whole RC plug in to a new level..

As far as the traffic goes.. My top sites service (not RC) beings about 18,000 hits a month to my site..

Have you tried this in the rc_rank template just out of curiosity? I am not saying it will work but it might.

The ID tag is available to you, and I can't see why the if statments wouln't be either, as the template is parsed by the GT HTML module anyways.

As for your other post: Its all a question of time katabd... I dont have a lot of it, as I am supporting a few plugins and quite of few users now... which leaves me less time. I will look at every suggestion eventually, and see what it involved for me to implement and if it is something everyone can use.

RC brought me over 5,000 hits yesterday alone. Unforuntaely you can't see this on the site, as I have to play around with the data for testing purposes :-(.

Yeah... if one could only fit a week into a day! I am sure GT wishes the same!Smile

Let me know how you made out with trying that if statment in RC, i'd be interested to know if it does work.

Hi

the problem was in the remotCount.pm file.

I posted the solution in your private forum area since it contains some of the codes...

Hi Katabd,

Good work. Users of the RC can see this under the new Remote Count forum on my site.

I have still been tinkering with the trend meter, and it has advanced slightly to show a more relaistic trend. I have decided not to advance it beyond what it is (for a while at least), as I want to get on with some of the other projects I have piled up. It will now work well independant of the number of users calling the top x function, so could be used in a dynamic situation just fine. (untested).

I will look at including it with a future version of RC (unsupported) for those who wish to play around with it. You can see it working on my site or in my newsletter (if you are subscribed).

UPDATE

There will be a fix in the next release of RC, which corrects non-validated sites being included in the top X list. (thanks Laura).

Information on this is avialable in the 'Remote Count' forum on iuni.
