Not at all - if that's what I was after I'd just go into the admin and change it
I'm trying to trace down a bug that I have seen once or twice, but it seems whatever I do I cannot reproduce it

It seems to be with reporting new posts. Sometimes I've seen it happen where I post a message, then go back to the forum list and it shows 1 NEW in that forum - but I click the forum and there aren't any new.
Like I said, I've seen it a couple times, but any attempts to reproduce it on my part have failed.

No - posts are sorted in chronological order with the most recently posted to thread at the top. Let's say you have read the most recent thread; when you return to the thread list you have already read the most recent, so it is marked as read. The sorting is by date, not whether or not you have read the post.
