referring to the width being "1":

after the top_row the first td has no width declaration, while the following ones are declared.
the thread column can't be 1 pixel.

I was wondering since there might have been a reason for it.

It was the keep the column as small as possible.

Nope - browsers will only wrap on certain things. Actually, that width=1 is used in several places, with "<nobr>" tags (and the <%nbsp ...%> template directive) to keep things from wrapping.
