Why can I come to this forum and read posts without logging in, but can't set my own forum up like this?

I have default guest permissions set to read access as well as the specific forum setup to allow guests to read threads. But going in, not logged in, I simply get redirected to the login screen when ever I click on the message.

So what am I net setting up correctly?

It sounds like you have the wrong permission set. There are multiple levels of read-only access - If you use "Posts viewable but not readable" you'll get the behaviour you are describing. This should be changed to "Read Access".

and then going to the 'Technical Archives' then 'Engines'

Guests, non-validated and registered users are all set to
'read access' Could you please try accessing it without
registering or logging in. thanks

I think I found the problem - the forum permissions are fine, but you changed the permissions of the "forum_view_collapsed" action to only allow certain groups to use that action. By default, viewing a forum uses forum_view_collapsed.

This URL asks me to login: gforum.cgi?do=forum_view_collapsed;forum=2
This one shows me the forum: gforum.cgi?do=forum_view_expanded;forum=2

What you need to do is edit the action, and uncheck the "Restrict this action to members of the following groups" checkbox.
