Now what would be clever was every time the admin module is run, it checked the version against the gossamer server and if a newwer version has been released, show a message saying 'new version release => go here to download'.

That wouldn't bee too difficult would it? Would that be any useful for anyone apart from me?

Hmm you'd want to wait for a socket connection everytime you opened admin.cgi? ....I wouldn't.

Perhaps a link would be better to check for updates rather than automatic checking every time.

Opening a socket to make a simple check would not slow down the module at all. It would only be for the very first page, anyway. I bet you couldn't even benchmark the difference.

Anyway, why not make it an option then?

An option or link is fine, I just don't think its a good idea to have it on the main page everytime you open it....but that's just MO.

You could.

If the server was seriously clogged, granted. I just think it would be a clever option that's all. It would certainly impress me :-)
