Is there a way to place Who's Online and / or you have New Messages on a normal HTML / SHTML frontpage using SSI or something ?????

Not that I can think of. Your best bet, is to write a script that will grab the things you want from the database, and call that via SSI.

You could possibly make a separate template set called, say, SSI, and then from your shtml file call gforum.cgi?do=whos_online&t=SSI
