help menu not working

help menu not working
I downloaded and installed GForum which seemed to go OK. I can register new users and was able to set up a forum.

However, when I click the 'help' button on the admin panel, little happens except the top few lines of the screen are duplicated (and disappear with a reload).

I am using version 1.1.8 in the 30 day demo mode on a RH linux machine with Apache.

Hmmm maybe all is not working OK as I see that MySQLMan link does nothing either.

Thanks for any help.

Hi regert,

Can you take a look at the web server error log and see if any error messages are showing up?

Hi:
I went to the admin page, selected Tools and then clicked Help.

It's rather awkward for me to cut and paste so I hope this isn't too garbled. Portions of access_log and error_log follow.

Everything looks normal to me

I don't have an installation of opera handy - can you test this with IE? That at least would eliminate the browser as a problem.

Worked in netscape.

Opera is so much faster though.

Hopefully the only part that won't work correctly is the admin section. Everybody who will be acessing GF will be doing it via Opera.

Think there might be something in Opera that I could tweak on my end to make it work correctly ? I've gather that not all browsers play by the rules.

Thanks

Do you have Javascript turned on? Both the 'help' function and the 'mysql' link rely on Javascript.

This sounded like a good possibility as I have had some difficulty with Java working with Opera. I downloaded and installed the full Java server from Sun and set up per the directions in Opera. It did not work until I shut down and rebooted the PC.

If I then went to the Sun test site, their Java script/program ran fine.

However, the 'help' menu and MySQLMan still do not. (Not all was lost though because now the search feature of the o'reilly perl on CD does work.)

Are there other parts of GTForum or GT SQL that also need Java ?

It's not Java that it is dependant on, but rather Javascript - other than the name, the two have nothing in common. I'm not sure about Opera, but IE, Phoenix, and Mozilla all have something along the lines of a checkbox named "Enable scripting", which needs to be enabled for those help pages and windows (such as Fileman) to work.

I believe javascript is working correctly in opera. I tested at
http://www.essex1.com/...le/timothy/go-js.htm
and it seemed to work fine.

Would it be against net/forum etiquette to post this as a separte question ie have others been able to get Opera to co-operate. ?

Hi,

I just tested Opera 6.05 and 7.00b2 and both were able to display the help page and the Mysqlman link. Try going to Preferences->Multimedia and make sure Enable Javascript is checked, as well as report javascript errors and see what happens. This is the first report I've heard of this.

Does it happen on our Links SQL demo at:

http://gossamer-threads.com/...sql2/admin/admin.cgi
(Username: admin Password: admin)

Click on the help link and see if it does the same thing.

Cheers,

Alex

Alex,
Checked off boxes as suggested: still no luck. I can see a flash at the bottom of the opera screen that says 'javascript executing' (or something like that), but nothing happens when I click MySQLMan. If I click 'help' the top part of the screen is copied again (as before).

I get no error messages.

Is javascript used outside the 'admin' section of GForum or GManSQL ?

For the record, I tested on another PC and Opera and GForum worked fine

As a final comment here, I was able to get opera to display help pages after I allowed it to accept pop-up boxes (which is apparently what the help menu does).

Hmm, sounds like Opera is being overzealous then. Phoenix (and, I think, Mozilla) also have this feature - but it allows popups that you have specifically requested, just not ones from, e.g., onload javascript events.
