Okay, did a little testing and it seems as if Netscape won't set a cookie for a site if you specify the domain for the cookie and are accessing the site not through a subdomain (ie. just gossamer-threads.com).
Netscape will only set the cookie if you don't specify the domain field in the cookie. So:

visit: gossamer-threads.com
cookie: domain field NOT set
=> works

visit: gossamer-threads.com
cookie: domain set to gossamer-threads.com
=> doesn't work

visit: gossamer-threads.com
cookie: domain set to .gossamer-threads.com
=> doesn't work

visit: www.gossamer-threads.com (or *.gossamer-threads.com)
cookie: domain set to .gossamer-threads.com
=> works

I'm trying to find more info on this on google, but I'm just getting results about the cookie bugs which plagued earlier version of Netscape.

If you want to experience this yourself (ie. you're bored), you can visit these links to test:

These links will set the domain field, and thus will be broken on Netscape:
http://www.brewt.org/~brewt/cookies.php
http://brewt.org/~brewt/cookies.php

This will work with Netscape, but it will only work with that particular domain:
http://brewt.org/~brewt/cookies.php?ns=1

Make sure you logout with the first set of url's or you'll get really confused when you go onto the next one and find you're already logged in and can't log out :)

Sorry, when I say Netscape I mean Netscape 4.x. Netscape 6 technically is just Mozilla Tongue

Thanks for looking into this, Adrian.

Another user in the Perl/CGI Forum mentioned that removing the domain attribute in the cookie codes will work for lower versions of NS. Hopefully, GT will apply these codes to the Forum software among other products they develop to ensure that there is backward compatibility.

Thanks again.

But the problem with omitting the domain from the cookie is that now the cookie won't work if they go to www.gossamer-threads.com, but I suppose at least they can log on.
I wonder what other browsers exibit this problem (mainly wondering about Mac's).
